Chargers handle Cavs to earn regional berth
Chargers handle Cavs to earn regional berth | Westview Chargers, Crockett County Cavaliers, Davell Lloyd, Jacob Lloyd, Will Thompson, District 13-AA tournament, Martin, Tennessee

Nothing easy — Westview senior Davell Lloyd (left) takes it to the rim against Crockett County's Chad Ingram in the Chargers' 59-50 district tourney win on Wednesday night.
It wasn't quite as easy as their last victory over the Crockett County Cavaliers, but the Westview Chargers will certainly take a 59-50 win in the District 13-AA Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday night at Dyer.
The two teams met in their regular-season finale on the previous Thursday night, and Westview crushed Crockett County, 67-37. In the must-win tournament game, the Cavs put up a much better fight, crashing the boards for rebounds and second-chance points before succumbing to the Chargers.
With the win, Westview ad-vances to the tourney semifinals where it will face Obion County at 7:30 on Friday night at Dyer. WHS also earns a region berth.
The Chargers, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, couldn't shake free from the Cavs, the No. 7 seed, in the first quarter. The score was tied at 2 and 4. The Cavs took their only lead of the game at 10-9 on a fastbreak layup by Dexter Thompson with two minutes to play in the first quarter. Westview got the final six points of the frame including a steal and jumper by Davell Lloyd with 12 seconds left in the stanza to hold a 15-10 lead after eight minutes of action.
In the second quarter, Crockett County forged the fourth tie of the night at 17-all when Tim Frye pulled down a defensive rebound and went the length of the court for a layup. Westview again answered with a 6-0 run to regain the lead. Cameron Boyd had an old-fashioned 3-point play and Will Thompson added a short jumper in the run.
The Cavs cut the gap to one, 27-26, on a Dexter Thompson trey, but Westview held for the last shot. Boyd converted a 15-footer before the horn for a WHS 29-26 halftime lead.
Westview pushed its lead to double digits for the first time at the 4:21 mark of the third quarter when Will Thompson converted a traditional 3-point play for a 39-28 Charger lead.
In addition to Thompson's work down low for WHS, Garrett Vincent added four points in the quarter in the paint. At the end of the third, Westview still maintained a 45-36 advantage.
Crockett County cut the gap to six points on a Frye hoop with 1:19 left in the game. Westview hit 5-of-8 free throws after that to preserve the 59-50 victory.
Davell Lloyd topped all scorers with 15 points. Will Thompson added a dozen points for WHS. Jacob Lloyd finished with 12.
For the Cavs, Thompson and Shaw each scored 13 points.
