Garner's no-hitter is stellar start to 2009 Chargers baseball season
Garner's no-hitter is stellar start to 2009 Chargers baseball season | Westview baseball, Travis Garner, Parham, Martin, Tennessee

No-No — Westview right-hander Travis Garner kept the Red Devil batters at bay in the Chargers' 10-0 victory over host South Fulton in the 2009 season opener on Monday afternoon. Garner hurled a five-inning no-hitter.
It took just five innings for Westview to open the 2009 baseball season in a big way.

The Chargers traveled to South Fulton and ended the game early by shutting out the Red Devils 10-0 and collecting a no-hitter for junior pitcher Travis Garner.

The right-hander was in control from the start and never in trouble in helping the Chargers get off to a great start in 2009.

In the top of the first inning, Taylor Weber was hit by a pitch and took first base. Madison Hughey hit a fly ball that dropped in to score Weber. Travis Garner drove in another run and Westview led 2-0.

The Chargers kept the momentum going in the second inning as Stanton Watson singled and Blake Parham followed with a single of his own. Alex Parham drove a fly ball into center field to score Watson and Adam Garner doubled to drive in two more runs and put Westview up 5-0 after the top of the second.

In the first two innings, Travis Garner retired three in a row each time he stepped on the mound. He allowed his first walk in the third, but the Red Devils failed to capitalize on the rare on-base opportunity.

The Chargers tacked on two runs in the third on a single from Weber and three more runs in the fifth on hits from Andrew Fisher, Drake Copeland and Blake Parham to lead 10-0.

Travis Garner forced an out in foul territory, struck out a batter and finished the contest and the no-hitter by catching the next batted ball and making the toss to first to seal the 10-0 victory.

The Chargers couldn't extend their season-opening winning streak to a pair on Tuesday. The University School of Jackson Bruins dealt Westview a 10-2 loss in Jackson.
