Lady Dawgs use Clarksburg errors to notch split
The Gleason Lady Bulldogs softball team's season-opening doubleheader with the  host Clarksburg Lady Rockets provided a bit of everything Monday afternoon in Clarksburg.

There was a low-scoring nailbiter resulting in a 2-1 loss for Gleason, followed by a high-scoring 17-1 win over the Lady Rockets.

In the opener, the Lady Dawgs had trouble against Clarksburg's Erica Yarbro, who struck out 12 Gleason batters in pitching her team to the 2-1 win. Yarbro limited Gleason to just three hits.

The Lady Rockets took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Yarbro singled and scored.

Gleason knotted the score at 1-all in the top of the second. Sophomore Kaitlyn Collins ripped a one-out triple and scored. Briana Jones came through with a two-out single in the at-bat and stole second base. As the go-ahead run, Jones was stranded at second.

Collins, the Gleason starting pitcher, struck out the side in the bottom of the second to keep the score tied at 1-all.

In the top of the third, the Lady Dawgs got a two-out single from Heather Bowles, but couldn't advance her home.

Clarksburg moved back in front in the home half of the inning. The Lady Rockets used three errors to score an unearned run and grab a 2-1 lead.

Yarbro made the one-run ad-vantage stand up. After Mallory James reached on an error in the fourth, Yarbro retired the next six batters she faced to close out the 2-1 win in five innings.

In the second game, the Clarksburg defense imploded and the Lady Dawgs took advantage for a 17-1 win.

Clarksburg committed 14 errors, including eight in one inning. Eight of the nine Lady Dawgs scored a run in the win.

Both teams had base runners in the first inning. Gleason's Bowles reached via an error but was stranded at second base.

In the second inning, Gleason pitcher Alicyn Martin struck out all three Lady Rocket batters she faced.

For GHS in the second inning, Kaitlyn Collins led off and reached on an error and eventually scored the game's first run.

Martin gave up a CHS single in the third, but she kept the Lady Rockets off the scoreboard.

In Gleason's half of the third, the Lady Dawgs got on the run-scoring merry-go-round and put 12 runs on the scoreboard thanks to five hits and eight errors. Alicyn Martin, Bowles, James and Kaitlyn Collins all scored twice in the inning.

Sami Verdell was the only Gleason batter with two hits in the victory.
