Lady Yellowjackets begin district title defense with twin victories
Lady Yellowjackets begin district title defense with twin victories | Greenfield tennis, Mallorie Robinson, Katie McCall, greenfield, Tennessee
The Greenfield High School Lady Yellowjackets hit the courts to defend their District 14 A-AA tennis crown on Monday and Tuesday.

Looking at the results from their first two days of action in the 2009 season, the rest of the teams in the district will have to step up if they plan on knocking Greenfield from its throne.

The Lady Jackets swept through the Obion County Central Lady Rebels on Monday, winning 12-0. On Tuesday, the Dyer County Lady Choctaws were the victim, falling 7-0 to Greenfield.

Basking in the gorgeous conditions Mother Nature provided for the opening day of spring sports, the Lady Yellowjackets wasted little time in taking down Obion County Monday afternoon in Union City. Ten singles matches and two doubles matches were played, allowing every player on both teams to see action early in the season.

Defending district singles champion Katie McCall whipped through the opposition provided by OC's No. 1 singles player, Samantha Scott, winning 8-0.

At No. 2 singles, Greenfield's Mallory Robinson continued the trend, blanking her Obion County foe Angel Rhoads, 8-0. That same 8-0 score provided wins for Greenfield at No. 6 and at No. 8 in singles play. Hannah Rawls blanked Allison Reddin at No. 6, while Taylor Hatcher shut out Brittney Bizwell at No. 8.

Summer Hoke, playing at No. 3 for GHS, downed Jessica Crackel, 8-2.

Greenfield earned 8-1 victories at both No. 4,  No. 5 and No. 7 in singles. Melissa McCartney topped Kacee Sanders at No. 4, while Natalie Medling was the victor over Lauren Berner at No. 5. At No. 7, Haley Perkins stopped Kacee Warren.

At No. 9, Emily Allen picked up another GHS win by an 8-3 score.

Playing at No. 10, Greenfield's Hannah Mosley made it a sweep for the Lady Jackets by winning 8-6 over Allison Reddin.

In doubles play, Greenfield won both matches by identical 8-0 margins. At No. 1, McCall and Robinson stopped Crackel and Scott. At No. 2, Hoke and McCartney teamed up to stop Rhodes and Sanders.

On Tuesday, the Lady Jackets had their first official "home" match. After playing in vagabond manner without any true home matches in their first three seasons, Greenfield will host some matches in 2009 on the Skyhawk Courts on the UT Martin campus.

After perfect conditions on Monday, the wind became a factor on Tuesday. Gusts of wind made play more difficult for everyone, but the Lady Jackets fought through to gain their first home victory, downing Dyer County, 7-0, by winning all five singles matches and the two doubles matches.

In the most exciting match of the day, Greenfield's Robinson managed to outlast Lady Choctaw Holly Adcock, 8-6, in back-and-forth action at No. 2 singles.

At No. 1, McCall earned her second singles win of the season by an 8-0 score when she blanked Amanda Wright.

At No. 3 singles, Hoke downed Brianna Klutts by an 8-2 score.

McCartney was the victor at No. 4, winning over Madison King by an 8-1 margin.

Medling picked up a victory at No. 5 by a forfeit.

In doubles, Robinson and McCall stopped Wright and Adcock, 8-3.

At No. 2 in doubles play, the Greenfield duo of Medling and Rawls shut out Burns and Bigham, 8-0.

Greenfield returns to the courts in Martin on Thursday when they take on the Westview Lady Chargers with action to begin at 3:30. GHS will end a busy first week when they host Gibson County at 4 on Friday afternoon at Skyhawk Courts.
