Westview blanks Lady Lions before solid showing in Jackson
Westview blanks Lady Lions before solid showing in Jackson | Westview Lady Chargers softball, Dresden Lady Lions softball, Shanna Chappell, Shaylon Robb, Ashley Bynum, Sam Giesler, Martin, Dresden, Tennessee

Up and over — Dresden shortstop Jesica Parsley (left) concentrates on a rapidly approaching grounder while Lady Charger Jenna Hazelwood leaps over the incoming ball during doubleheader action Wednesday in Dresden. Westview swept the pair.
The Westview Lady Chargers used their strong pitching tandem of Shanna Chappell and Shaylon Robb to blank in-county rival Dresden in a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday at Wilson Park in Dresden. The Lady Chargers won by scores of 6-0 and 7-0 over the DHS girls.

The twin wins primed the Westview girls for a busy weekend in which they went 4-1 in the Sarah Beth Whitehead Memorial Tournament in Jackson. The Lady Chargers swept their pool games and went 1-1 in the tournament portion of the bracket.

In the first game against Dresden, Chappell faced the minimum 15 batters without allowing a hit. She notched eight strikeouts and hit one batter.

The Lady Charger offense got things going in the first inning. Robb doubled with one out and scored on Ashley Bynum's single. Bynum, Sam Giesler, who reached on an error, and Jenna Hazelwood, who walked, all eventually scored for a 4-0 lead.

Giesler and Bynum scored again in the third inning to provide a little extra run support in downing Dresden, 6-0.

In the second game, it was Robb pitching a one-hit gem. The sophomore struck out seven and didn't give up a walk.

At the plate, Westview used a two-out rally in the top of the first to give Robb all the ammunition she needed.

Giesler singled and Bynum brought her home with a double down the third base line. Bynum crossed home on a Hazelwood single to right. Hazelwood, Grace Ann Swaim and Chappell all singled and scored for a 5-0 Westview lead.

In the home half of the first, Dresden got its lone hit of the afternoon when Melissa Burkeen singled up the middle. Robb got the next DHS batter, Marlee Mason, on a liner for the third out to end Dresden's threat.

The Lady Chargers added the final two runs to their total in the second inning. Kelly Gaston reached on an error and Robb singled. Both scored on Hazelwood's two-RBI single to left field for a 7-0 advantage and a win by the same score.

On Friday, the Lady Chargers opened pool play in Jackson with a 6-3 win over Ripley.

The Ripley Lady Tigers got a run in the top of the first, but Westview answered with a run in the home half of the inning. Kelly Gaston led off with a single and scored on a Bynum single for a 1-all tie.

Westview took the lead in the second with a four-run outburst. Chappell helped her own cause with a RBI triple and scored to help ignite the at-bat that put the Lady Chargers in front for good on the way to the 6-3 victory.

Gaston and Bynum both went 3-for-3 in the win.

In their second pool outing on Friday night, WHS bashed Briarcrest, 13-0. Both Giesler and Bynum drove in four runs. Gaston and Robb scored three runs each. Robb whiffed nine and allowed one hit in five innings on the mound.

In the final pool game and first action on Saturday, the Lady Chargers beat McNairy, 9-2.

Bynum and Giesler continued to swing a clutch stick. Bynum drove in three runs and Giesler plated a pair. Swaim swatted a solo homer over the fence.

On the mound, Chappell struck out a dozen, included four in an inning on two occasions.

In their first tournament game, the Lady Chargers nipped South Side, 3-2. Chappell drove in a pair with a double at the plate and struck out 10 on the mound.

Bynum was the lone WHS batter with two hits. She drove in a run and scored once.

A rematch with McNairy resulted in a 2-0 loss for the Lady Chargers. Westview managed just two hits — a Mckenzie Norris double and a Chappell single.

Robb took the loss, allowing six hits while striking out nine.
