Lady Lions keep Gleason in check
Lady Lions keep Gleason in check | Dresden Lady Lions, Courtney McMillin, Gleason Lady Bulldogs softball, West Carroll softball, Dresden, Tennessee

Strike — Dresden right-hander Courtney McMillin struck out 23 batters in two games earlier this week. McMillin whiffed a dozen in her team's 9-0 win over Gleason on Monday and struck out 11 in a 5-3 loss to West Carroll on Tuesday.
Pitcher Courtney McMillin and the Dresden Lady Lion defense held intra-county rival and District 14-A foe Gleason in check for a 9-0 shutout win on Monday afternoon in Wilson Park in Dresden.

The Lady Lions couldn't string together back-to-back wins though as visit West Carroll's Lady War Eagles returned to Atwood with a 5-3 win over Dresden on Tuesday despite another strong mound showing from McMillin.

McMillin struck out a dozen GHS Lady Bulldogs, retiring the side in order in four of the seven innings she worked.

In the top of the first, the DHS right-hander struck out a pair.

The Lady Lions threatened in the home half of the inning, as McMillin drew a walk and advanced all the way around to third base. Gleason starter Alicyn Martin worked out of the jam by getting Melissa Burkeen to fly out to GHS third baseman Mallory James for the second out and Marlee Mason to fly out to Lady Dawg second baseman Heather Bowles, stranding the runner at third.

Dresden took the lead in the bottom of the second as Erica Glisson drew a walk and scored on Brooke Irvine's RBI single. Irvine eventually scored for a 2-0 Lady Lion lead.

Gleason's Sarah Passeri reached base in the top of the third, ending a streak of eight consecutive batters retired. However, the Lady Dawgs didn't advance Passeri past first.

The Lady Lions put another run on the board in the third when Burkeen touched home.

The Lady Dawgs had their best chance to score in the fourth when James got all the way to third, but another strikeout by McMillin ended the threat.

In the DHS half of the fourth, Jesica Parsley walked and scored on a RBI single by McMillin. McMillin later scored on Mason's single for a 5-0 lead.

Irvine walked and scored in the fifth inning for Dresden. The Lady Lions got three more runs in the sixth when Burkeen, Mason and Glisson reached home to round out scoring in the 9-0 Dresden win.

On Tuesday against West Carroll, McMillin again was strong on the mound, but the end result wasn't the same.

The Lady War Eagles got their leadoff batter on and sent her across home plate in the top of the first inning.

Dresden retaliated in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 advantage. Parsley drew a one-out walk and scored. Irvine also touched home. Tori Flippen got as far as third base before West Carroll put the third out in the scorebooks.

In the top of the third, the War Eagles regained the lead with two runs to go ahead, 3-2.

The Lady Lions knotted the score at 3-all when Mason walked and scored. Parsley was stranded at second in the at-bat.

After a scoreless fourth, West Carroll moved back in front with two runs to lead 5-3.

In their last at-bat, the Lady Lions threatened to tie the score. Kaci Robbins earned a one-out walk and Glisson ripped a two-out single up the middle. McMillin then lifted a liner to shallow right that got caught up in the wind and then caught in a glove for the third out to end the inning and the game.
