The Gleason Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a trip to the Blugrass State by earning a pair of wins over the host Fulton City Lady Bulldogs Monday afternoon in Fulton, Ky.
The Gleason girls edged out a 7-6 win in the first game before riding that momentum to a 9-0 win in the afternoon's finale.
In the first game, it was the top of the GHS Lady Dawg order that did the bulk of the damage. The first four batters scored all the Gleason runs in the 7-6 win. The Fulton City defense helped out by committing four errors.
In the top of the first, back-to-back errors put Gleason's Heather Bowles and Taylor Stout on base. A double off the bat of Audrea Martin followed. All three scored for a 3-0 lead.
A pair of Gleason errors in the bottom of the first allowed Fulton City to cut into the Lady Dawg lead. GHS pitcher Haley Collins worked out a jam by striking out two batters to strand two Fulton City baserunners in scoring position and keep Gleason in front, 3-1.
After the eventful first inning, both sides went down in order in the second inning.
The scoring resumed in the third when Fulton City plated five runs on only two hits. The Gleason defense committed three errors in the inning to move the team from the Bluegrass State in front, 6-3.
Gleason waited until its final at-bat in the five inning game to regain the advantage. The Lady Dawgs pushed four runs across home plate. Sami Verdell got things started with a one-out single. Bowles added a single. Stout reached on another error and Martin had her second double of the afternoon. All four Lady Dawgs scored to give Gleason the 7-6 lead.
An error and two walks loaded the bases in the Fulton City half of the fifth inning, but Collins worked out of the jam by striking out three batters to preserve Gleason's 7-6 victory. Collins struck out eight batters in five innings of work.
In the easier 9-0 win over Fulton City, Gleason used 10 hits and seven FC errors to plate its runs.
Verdell was swinging the hot stick in the victory, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two runs scored. Briana Jones touched home plate three times for the Orange and Black. Bowles scored twice in the win.
On the mound, Alicyn Martin got the victory, striking out four and allowing just one hit over five innings of work.
An earlier trip to the Twin Cities didn't bring the same results last Thursday. The host South Fulton Lady Red Devils took a 12-2 win from Gleason.
