Jackets, Lions swap wins
Jackets, Lions swap wins | Dresden Lions Baseball, Greenfield Yellowjackets baseball, Dalton Potts, Heath Crouse, Eric Evans, Greenfield, Dresden, Tennessee

Meet you at home — Dresden's Dale Hutcherson (right) prepares to go into a slide while Yellowjacket catcher Daniel Ricketts waits for the throw during action Monday at Wilson Park in Dresden. The two teams split a doubleheader.
In a give-and-take doubleheader, the Greenfield Yellowjackets and Dresden Lions took turns celebrating victories.

The Jackets took the first win on one big swing, riding a grand slam to a 7-4 win. In the second game, Dresden's Eric Evans struck out 10 batters as the Lions took a 3-1 win over Greenfield.

In the opening game, the Lions grabbed the first lead when Matt Beaty reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Eric Evans smashed a one-out double.  Evans moved on to third on the throw home. GHS starting pitcher Dalton Potts worked out of trouble by striking out the next two Dresden batters.

Potts also showcased his skills at the plate in the top of the second. Consecutive singles by Jacob Johnson and Ty Smithson were followed by a walk issued to Tyler Jones. Potts then smashed a line drive off the scoreboard for a grand slam to give Greenfield a 4-1 lead.

DHS starter Gatlin Hatchel worked around a leadoff double by Heath Crouse in the third inning. On a fly to center, Crouse tagged up and headed to third. Lion center fielder Austin Evans fired a perfect throw to third baseman Daniel Harris to erase Crouse.

It appeared Dresden would cut into its deficit in the bottom of the third, but Potts worked out of a bases-loaded jam. A fielder's choice and two walks filled the bases, but Potts got Harris to bounce back to the mound. Potts threw to Daniel Ricketts for the force out at the plate, and the GHS catcher then threw to first to complete the double play and end the inning with the Jackets still in front, 4-1.

The Lions pulled to within a run by scoring twice thanks to two errors in the home half of the fourth. Austin Evans put down a bunt single and scored, while Dale Hutcherson reached on an error and scored. A Hatchel single brought in Hutcherson to trim the Greenfield lead to 4-3.

The Jackets got one run back in the fifth when Cody Ricketts reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Crouse double. Crouse was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the game.

Greenfield got two insurance runs in the top of the second. Tyler Jones led off with a single. Crouse drove in his second run of the game with a single to plate Jones. Crouse scored when Daniel Ricketts lined a double to deep left for a 7-3 Yellowjacket advantage.

In their final at-bat, the Lions made some noise when Hatchel singled and scored on an Eric Evans single up the middle. Hatchel was 3-for-4 at the plate for DHS with one run and a RBI. Harris also singled, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Crouse, who relieved Potts in the sixth, got a strikeout to end the game with Greenfield on top, 7-4.

In the second game, Greenfield moved in front in the second inning when Jacob Johnson singled and scored on a Jake Lasater single to right.

The Lions forged a 1-all tie in the top of the third when Hatchel singled and later scored on a GHS error. The damage might have been greater, but Beaty got picked off second base and tagged out in a rundown.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Lions scored the game's final two runs in the top of the fifth. Beaty singled and moved to third on a double to deep center field by Eric Evans. Chris Peeler brought them both home with a two-run single down the right field line for a two-run Dresden lead at 3-1.

Dresden right-hander Eric Evans stranded Yellowjacket baserunners in both the fifth and sixth innings before retiring the side in order in the seventh to send the Lions to the 3-1 victory.
