Runner-up — The Westview Lady Chargers softball team shows off the plaque it received for finishing in second place in the "War in the Dawg Pound" Tournament held over the weekend in Milan. The Lady Chargers posted a 4-1-1 overall record in the tourney.

The Westview Lady Chargers couldn't come up with enough hits when they needed them in falling, 3-0, to the Huntingdon Fillies in the championship game of the War in the Dawg Pound Tournament held over the weekend in Milan.
The Lady Chargers were held to just two hits in both the championship game and in their 1-1 tie with McKenzie in pool play. Westview took the runner-up plaque compiling a 4-1-1 record combined in pool and bracket action in Milan.
In the championship game, the Lady Chargers had trouble making contact with Fillies pitcher Brooke Thomas' pitches. Thomas struck out 14 Lady Chargers in six innings of work on the mound, while allowing just the two base hits.
While Thomas was tough, the Huntingdon defense gave the Lady Chargers some chances, committing three errors.
One of those HHS errors came in the top of the first. Westview's Shaylon Robb reached on an error with one out in the books. Sam Giesler put down a sacrifice bunt to move Robb to second, but Thomas got one of her many strikeouts to strand Robb in scoring position at second.
The Fillies carried the momentum into the home half of the first inning. Thomas worked over Westview with her bat as well as her arm, leading off with a double. She moved to third on an error in the outfield. WHS starter Shanna Chappell then hit the next batter she faced to put runners on the corners. Sabrina Stover then stole second. Chappell got the first out on a strikeout, but a single off the bat of Deidra Jordan brought both Thomas and Stover home for a 2-0 Huntingdon lead. Chappell then got a pair of fly outs to end the Fillies' threat.
In the top of the second, Westview's Mckenzie Norris reached on a fielding error, but never got any closer to home when the next three Lady Chargers struck out to leave Huntingdon in front, 2-0.
Chappell worked out of a jam in the bottom of the second. The WHS right-hander gave up consecutive one-out singles and then a walk to load the bases. Just as she did in the bottom of the first, Chappell got a pair of fly outs to end the inning.
In the third, Westview's Kelly Gaston knocked a one-out single and stole second but was stranded there.
Chappell hit a batter and gave up a single in the third, but again kept the Fillies from reaching home to keep the Lady Charger deficit at two runs, 2-0.
Westview had another golden opportunity to score in the fourth when Ashley Bynum smashed a leadoff triple. Norris reached on a fielder's choice as Bynum was tagged out at home for the first out. Two more strikeouts kept Norris from scoring.
Huntingdon added an insurance run in the Fillies' half of the fourth. Hailey Sullivan reached on an error, but was erased on a fielder's choice that put Thomas on first base. A groundout moved the HHS hurler to second base. Thomas scored on a double by Ashley Webb for a 3-0 Huntingdon lead.
After going down in order in the fifth, the Lady Chargers tried to make some noise in the top of the sixth. Leading off, an error allowed Robb to advance all the way to second base. Thomas retired the next three batters to end the tourney championship game with a Huntingdon celebration over its 3-0 victory.
Chappell took the loss on the mound, allowing seven hits, hitting two batters, walking one and striking out three. The WHS defense committed two errors behind Robb.
To reach the bracket portion of the tourney, the Lady Chargers went 2-0-1 in pool play.
In the first pool game, Westview easily bounced North Side, 9-0.
The Westview bats pounded out eight hits. Robb limited the Lady Indians to three hits while striking out nine and walking two in only four innings of mound work.
The Lady Chargers took control early with four runs in the first inning. North Side contributed with two errors. Gaston led off with a single. Robb then reached on an error. Giesler also reached on an error which allowed both Gaston and Robb to score. Giesler scored on a Bynum RBI groundout. Jenna Hazelwood tripled and scored on a Norris groundout for a 4-1 Westview advantage.
Bynum singled and scored on an error in the third.
In the bottom of the fourth, Grace Ann Swaim tripled and scored on Mary Kirk Mesimer's double. A Robb groundout brought in Mesimer. Gaston, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a Giesler single. Giesler scored on a Bynum single for a 9-0 win.
Gaston and Bynum both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Gaston scored twice and Bynum drove in two and touched home once.
In the second pool game, the Lady Chargers finished tied with the McKenzie Lady Rebels, 1-1, after five innings.
Westview got its only run in the top of the first inning. Gaston singled and moved to second on a Robb sacrifice bunt. A fly to center off Giesler's bat moved her to third. Bynum brought Gaston home with a single for a 1-0 Westview lead.
After going down in order against Chappell in the first and second innings, McKenzie used a leadoff triple and a passed ball to tie the game at 1-all.
Chappell worked around a two-out double in the fourth to end a McKenzie threat.
The Lady Chargers, after being retired in order in the second, third and fourth innings, threatened in the fifth. Back-to-back MHS errors put Chappell and Swaim on base. Gaston drew a walk to load the bases with two outs, but Chappell was forced out at home to end the inning.
Chappell struck out 10 Lady Rebs while allowing just two hits and a walk in five innings.
In the third pool game, Westview clipped Chester County, 3-0. Robb allowed just one hit while striking out 13 and walking one in six innings.
Hazelwood was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Bynum was 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI.
In the first tourney game, the Lady Chargers blanked the host Milan Lady Bulldogs, 5-0.
Hazelwood was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a RBI. Gaston went 2-for-3 at the plate with a RBI.
In the semifinals, Westview shut out South Side, 5-0, behind a Robb no-hitter. The sophomore right-hander struck out nine and didn't give up a walk or hit a batter over five innings.
Robb and Bynum both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Robb had a double and touched home plate once. Bynum also scored a run.
