Westview claims second runner-up finish
For the second weekend in a row, the Westview Lady Charger softball team managed a runner-up finish in an invitational tournament.

After taking second place the weekend before in Milan, the Lady Chargers travelled into the Bluegrass State to participate in the Slugfest Tournament hosted by Marshall County High School Friday and Saturday at Draffenville, Ky.

The Lady Chargers finished with a 5-2 overall record. Westview's only losses both came by 1-0 scores. Lady Charger pitchers Shaylon Robb and Shanna Chappell and the Westview defense combined to allow just three total runs in the tournament.

In the tourney championship game, the Lady Chargers fell to Butler, 1-0. Westview played six games on Saturday.

Both teams had a baserunner via an error in the first inning, but neither team scored.

In the top of the third, Butler got a leadoff triple off WHS starter Shaylon Robb. The eventual winning run scored on a groundout to put Butler up, 1-0.

In the WHS half of the fifth, Mckenzie Norris roped a one-out double but got no closer to home plate.

In the final Lady Charger at-bat, the Westview girls tried to rally. Robb singled to lead off, putting the tying run on first. Sam Giesler added a one-out single to move Robb to second base, but Butler got the second and third outs to preserve its 1-0 win to claim the tourney title.

Robb took the loss despite striking out 13 and allowing just two hits and no walks.

In their first pool game, the Lady Chargers faced off against the same Butler team that later defeated them for the crown.

Westview got the better of the first meeting, winning, 4-0, as Robb held Butler hitless over five innings.

The Lady Chargers put three runs on the board in the second inning using a double, three singles and an error. Ashley Bynum, Giesler and Norris all scored. Giesler had the double.

Mary Kirk Mesimer singled and later scored on an error for the fourth run.

Robb got the no-hit win, striking out 10 in five innings.

In the second pool game, it was Calloway County handing the Lady Chargers a hard-to-swallow 1-0 loss.

The Lady Chargers had a baserunner in each of the first four innings, but couldn't push them around to home plate.

Calloway County turned a leadoff single into a run with a two-out single.

Westview's biggest threat to score came in the bottom of the sixth. Jenna Hazelwood doubled to open the at-bat. Robb reached on a fielder's choice that kept Hazelwood at second. Hazelwood was eventually erased on a force out at third and Calloway County took the 1-0 win over Westview.

Shanna Chappell was stuck with the mound loss, allowing one run, while striking out eight and walking three in six inning.

The Westview offense bounced back to support its pitchers in the third pool game, downing Carbondale, 3-0.

Robb earned the shutout, one-hit win in four innings. Robb struck out four, walked one and hit a batter.

Westview's offense plated a run in three consecutive innings. Four of the five WHS hits were of the extra base variety. The eventual winning run came in the second inning. Grace Ann Swaim tripled and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Maddison Henderson for a 1-0 lead.

Hazelwood doubled and scored on a Norris double in the third. Chappell doubled and scored on a Henderson groundout in the fourth to give Robb the run support she needed in a 3-0 win over Carbondale.

In the first bracket game, Westview blasted Crittendon, 11-0, in five innings.

Robb took care of business on the mound and at the plate. The sophomore allowed just one hit and struck out 13 without giving up a walk.

With a bat in her hand, Robb tripled to drive in two and scored a run in the first inning. The 3-0 lead ignited the 11-0 win.

In the second bracket game, WHS bounced Walton Verona, 9-1, in six innings.

Robb pitched another one-hitter, striking out a dozen batters.

In the bracket semifinals, the Lady Chargers blanked Assumption, 3-0, to advance to the championship game..

Westview got two runs in the  third inning. Gaston singled and scored on an error. Robb, safe on that same error, later scored on another error.

The third run came when the Lady Chargers rapped out three singles in the fifth. Robb scored on a Giesler sacrifice.
