Delphian Review Club meets

Posted: Thursday, April 16, 2009 8:01 pm

The Delphian Review Club held its April meeting in the home of Glenda Chrisp, with 16 members present.

President Vicki Blanton called the meeting to order. Following roll call, Ann Cameron gave a review of Ben Sherwood’s thought-provoking book, “The Survivor’s Club.”

The author talks about human factors in survival. As he tells of horrific accidents and situations ordinary people have gone through, he explains how their brains and their bodies react toward their circumstances. He relates what he calls being a “statue in a storm.” The stress of a crisis can cause the key part of the brain that processes new information to misfire and people lose their ability to make decisions — hence, they turn into statues. This syndrome is called the incredulity response.

Mrs. Cameron continued her review explaining some of the situations described in the book, including airplane crashes, heart attacks, magic numbers and the holocaust.

Following the program, chaplain Martha Clendenin read a quote by Jane Canfield entitled “A Smile Can Help” from Charles Swindoll’s book “Laugh Again” for the thought of the day.

After the business meeting, co-hostess Judi Pitts served a delicious chocolate brownie pie topped with vanilla ice cream, along with fresh Hawaiian pineapple and mixed nuts.
