UT Martin Kid College celebrates 25 years

Posted: Thursday, May 7, 2009 10:55 am

The Messenger 05.07.09
For 25 years, Kid College at the University of Tennessee at Martin has “inspired the desire to inquire” by providing children with an opportunity to have a fun, learning experience each summer.
This year, several new classes have been added to perennial favorites such as Space Camp, How to Be a Pet Pro, Grossology!, Creepy Crawlies, Painting on Glass and Beginning Guitar.
Marking the anniversary at the June 18 open house beginning at 6 p.m., a time capsule will be buried and all past Kid College children, teachers, volunteers and others are invited to attend. Also, previous participants have been asked to submit their favorite Kid College story —  a special experience they had at Kid College.
The nine-day program for children who will attend kindergarten in 2009 through the fifth grade is slated for June 8-18. Parents may review the course descriptions and select the course(s) for their children based on their interest and the appropriate grade level. Children may register for one to five courses.
Grades kindergarten through second grade may choose from Karate for Kids; Painting on Glass; Knights, Princesses and Castles; ABCs of Sign Language; Baking with Miss Baker; Abracadabra; Creepy Crawlies and Spooky Spiders; Grossology; Jr. Space Camp; Cheerleading Princesses; Party With Playdough; Music, Movement and More!; How to be a Pet Pro; Fabric Dying from Around the World; Sun-Catchers and Stained Glass Painting; Lights, Camera, Action!; Scrapbook Fun; Stellar Storybooks and many more.
Children in grades 3-5 may choose from Science Central; Pioneer Life; Cheerleading Queens; Karate for Kids; Scrapbook Fun; Hocus-Pocus or Hocus Focus?; Beginning Guitar; Painting on Glass; Let’s Make Some Music!; Sr. Space Camp; Advanced Explorers of Ancient Egypt; Lights, Camera, Action!; Crafty Kids; Grossology and many more.
Everyone is invited to attend the open house from 4:30-6 p.m. June 18. All parents, family and friends are invited to drop by and meet the teachers, view displays and watch demonstrations. Refreshments will be served.
Registration fee is $40 per class and Kid College T-shirts are available for an additional $10.
Advance registration is re-quired and space is limited. To register, call ECCE at (731) 881-7082 or 881-7081 or register online at http://www.utm.edu/departments/ecce/kidcollege.php.
A Kid College brochure may also be downloaded at http://www.utm.edu/departments/ecce/kidcollege.php.
