The Dyer County baseball team has reached the Final 4 of the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament in Murfreesboro.

The Choctaws, coached by former Union City assistant Preston Ozment, beat Bolivar 6-2 Wednesday to improve to 2-0 in the double elimination event.

DC needs only to beat Pigeon Forge in one of two games today to earn a berth in the championship round on Friday.

The Tribe’s fellow Dyer County and District 13AA entry, Dyersburg, saw its season end Wednesday in a 10-4 loss to David Lipscomb. 

The Trojans had beaten McMinn Central 21-2 earlier in the day before suffering its second loss in the tourney Wednesday.

Trinity Christian Academy and Huntingdon both are still alive in the Class A Softball Tournament.

TCA (43-1) beat Friendship Christian 10-0, while Huntingdon (38-5-1) edged Coalfield 1-0 in nine innings behind the no-hit effort of Brooke Thomas, who fanned 19.

Trinity will now face bitter rival Forrest today in a battle of unbeaten teams in the tournament. Forrest beat TCA twice a year ago to win the single-A crown and deny the Lady Lions a third consecutive state title.

TCA beat Forrest for the championship in both 2006 and ’07.

Westview saw its season end in the Class 2A tourney with a 7-3 loss to Chattanooga Christian.

The Lady Chargers ended their campaign — their third straight state tournament appearance — with a 36-13 record.

AYSO to hold signups  

at Obion Co. Library

The Union City American Youth Soccer Organization League will be holding its first registration of the year on Saturday at the Obion County Library.

The league will register players ages 4-18 from 9 a.m. until noon.

Only new players are required to bring a birth certificate on Saturday.

Weekly PMCC event

Poplar Meadows Country Club held its weekly scramble Wednesday with the winning team shooting 8-under par.

The winning team included Jere Baldridge, Rick Smith, Bruce Culver and Matt Russell.

Finishing in second at 7-under par was the team of Jason Kizer, Will Wade, Al Oliver, Gordon Bruff and Herman Jenkins.

The weekly scramble begins at 5:30 p.m. each week. The cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. The fee includes dinner.

Anyone interested in participating should call 885-3650 by 2 p.m. Wednesday.
