A Dresden man faced a jury of his peers in Weakley County today for an auto burglary felony charge. Wallace Ray Sowell was arrested Sept. 21, 2008 by the Martin Police Department after a witness identified Sowell near the scene of a vehicle break-in, according to an affidavit. The witness reported to officers he heard a car alarm around 1:45 in the morning and noticed a black male running from the area where the vehicle was located on Willow Lane, according to the report. Officers noted in their report after a search of the area, they discovered the defendant who allegedly refused to stop. After a brief foot pursuit, officers found Sowell lying in a ditch near Volunteer Trailer Park. According to the affidavit, the witness positively identified Sowell as the person who he observed in the area of the vehicle when the alarm had been activated. A 2000 Jeep Wrangler was listed in the affidavit as the target of a break-in. The owner of the vehicle told officers that loose change was missing from the vehicle. According to the affidavit, officers found Sowell in possession of $11.74 in loose change. Sowell was indicted in January of this year for one count of Class E felony burglary; one count of Class B misdemeanor resisting stop and Class misdemeanor theft.
