Finney meets with area's deployed soldiers
Finney meets with area's deployed soldiers | Lowe Finney, Sgt. Kelly Pounds, 1/230th Unit of Jackson, Tennessee, Dresden

State Sen. Lowe Finny with Dresden High School classmate Sgt. Kelly Pounds
FORT SILL, Okla. – Dresden native turned senator spent time last week offering well wishes and farewells to local soldiers headed to the Middle East.
State Sen. Lowe Finney met last Wednesday with Tennessee National Guard troops in Fort Sill, Okla., as they prepared to leave for Iraq.
The 1/230th Unit from Jackson mobilized to Fort Sill in March to begin training for the mission.
Members of the unit will return home for a short visit with family members before deploying to Iraq in the coming days.
“It was such an honor to spend time with these fine men and women,” Finney said.
“Many thanks to Adjutant General Gus Hargett for making this possible.
“Nothing compares to the sight of these true Tennessee volunteers, standing in formation. Their confident dignity – knowing the task they face – really brings home the meaning of freedom.”
Finney and seven other legislators boarded a Tennessee Air Guard WC-130 Wednesday morning and headed for the Henry Post Airfield at Fort Sill.
They attended a mission briefing followed by a deployment ceremony and had lunch with some of the troops.
Soldiers from across West Tennessee, some on their second and third tour of duty, visited with the senator.
“I saw friends I was in high school with and many, many fine members of our community who expressed great anticipation for answering the call of service. These are well-trained, ready and willing soldiers. This trip was indeed humbling and a true honor.”
Finney of Jackson represents Madison, Carroll and Gibson counties.
