Military visitation rights bill passes Senate

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Senate has approved legislation that creates a method for deployed parents to transfer visitation rights for a child to a relative.
The measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Dewayne Bunch of Cleveland was approved 21-5 on Tuesday.
The companion bill passed the House in March, but lawmakers must work out minor differences in the legislation before it heads to the governor for his consideration.
Under both proposals, the parent would have to be out of the state for at least 90 days. However, the Senate version would allow a judge to decide if the arrangement is in the child’s best interest.
Democratic Senate Minority Leader Jim Kyle of Memphis voted against the measure because he says in this case judges should not be involved in “family dynamics.”
