UTM baseball inks Brentwood Academy pitcher
MARTIN, Tenn. – Bubba Cates, the head baseball coach at the University of Tennessee at Martin, has set his sights on recruiting winners. The more winners he lands, the better chance his 2010 Skyhawks will have of winning. Cates inked his latest winner when he signed pitcher/outfielder Drew Floyd from Brentwood Academy.
“Drew will help us in a number of ways,” Cates said. “He’s a good player, and he is used to winning. You cannot put a price tag on that. Every program in the nation will tell you they need more winning attitudes on their teams.”
Floyd helped Brentwood Aca-demy win back-to-back Division II state championships in 2008 and 2009. In this year’s state tournament, he earned the victory on the mound for the Eagles as they defeated Christian Brothers 4-2 in the opening game. In the title game, Floyd came through with his bat. He was 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and a triple to lead the Eagles to a 12-2 win over St. Benedict.
On the year, Floyd hit .435 for head coach Buddy Alexander and the Eagles. On the mound he was 7-1. His efforts earned him All-Midstate honors this past season.
Floyd, 6-2 and 175 pounds, also played football at Brentwood Academy and helped the Eagles win the 2006 state championship.
Floyd, the son of Mark and Devin Floyd of Brentwood, is the ninth player to sign a baseball scholarship to play for the Skyhawks this fall.
