Fulton City looking
for new boys’ coach
Fulton City High School has a boys’ head basketball coaching vacancy.
Before a successor is named for George Yarbro, though, several classroom positions will be filled first, according to school administration.
Yarbro’s last official day as the Bulldogs’ head coach will be Tuesday after he resigned to accept an assistant’s position at Humboldt High School, where he will be an aide to longtime Viking skipper Thomas Boykin.
The Hickman County native spent three seasons at the Fulton City helm, compiling an overall 37-40 record. The best of those years was 2007-08 when he led the Bulldogs to 17 victories, including a spot in the First Region semifinals after beating Calloway County in the first round of the tournament.
Fulton City went 8-13 last season.
Yarbro served as Fulton City family resources and youth services coordinator and will reportedly work in a similar position in the Humboldt City School System.
Central soccer roster
in need of females
Obion Central soccer coach Daniel Johnston is looking for female players for the school’s first roster in the sport this fall.
Any girl interested may call Johnston at 795-1759.
Practice sessions are slated to begin on July 6.
The Central girls’ season will open in the fall, while the Rebel boys will participate in a spring sports season.
Johnston was named to coach both squads in May.
OC will participate in District 14A-AA in its inaugural campaign.
AYSO sign-up time
running out this week
Any local youths wishing to play soccer in the AYSO league have until Friday of this week to sign up for the coming season.
Interested players can register all week at the Union City Parks and Recreation Department office.
Youngsters ages 4 years old and up are eligible to participate in the league. First-time players must bring their birth certificates to sign up.
The registration fee is $30.

lures Duke transfer
MEMPHIS (AP) — Ex-Duke basketball player Elliot Williams says he’ll transfer to the University of Memphis.
Williams, a rising sophomore guard, was granted his release Wednesday from Duke because his mom is sick.
He told The Commercial-Appeal on Saturday that he’s planning to transfer to Memphis, in his hometown, because being closer to his family is the most important thing. It was one of the four schools he’d been considering, along with Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Tennessee.
He was not more specific about his mother’s illness.
He says he’s seeking a waiver of the NCAA rule forcing student-athletes to sit out a year after transferring.
Diamond Jaxx skipper
gets all-star position
JACKSON (AP) — West Tenn Diamond Jaxx manager Phil Plantier won’t get the All-Star break off.
Plantier has been tapped to manage the North Division squad during the Southern League’s mid-summer tilt on July 13 in Birmingham.
Plantier will be joined by West Tenn’s Pitching Coach Tomm Dettore and Hitting Coach Terry Pollreisz. West Tenn’s Athletic Trainer Matt Toth will serve in the same role for the North Division.
