Weakley Countians among top finishers at drag strip
Weakley Countians were again prevalent among the top finishers when the Playground of Power — Northwest Tennessee Motorsports Park — hosted another weekend of drag racing action in Gleason.
Except for the King of the Street division had a local among the top two finishers. Martin, Dresden, Greenfield, Gleason and Palmersville all had residents among the top two in different categories.
Stanley Sutton from Calvert City in the Bluegrass State was the top finisher in the King of the Street competition driving his 1985 S-10 to a speed of 129.36 mph.
In the Super Pro bracket, Clarksville's Douglas Davis was the winner, racing his 1979 Pinto to a speed of 106.44 mph. Taking the runner-up spot was Martin resident Benjamin Barnett in his 1965 Coupe with a speed of 113.89 mph.
In the Pro (No Box) competition, Dresden native Mike Peeler took the top prize in his 1969 Road Runner, reaching a speed of 96.58 mph. Following in second place was Clarksville resident Larry Osborne. Osborne drove his 1981 Monte Carlo to a top speed of 92.43 mph.
Greenfield resident Michael Walker was the fastest to the finish line in the Sportsman Footbrake division. Walker drove his 1974 Nova to a top speed of 80.65 mph. Taking second prize was McKenzie resident Mark Montgomery in his 1979 Mustang. Montgomery reached a speed of 95.14 mph.
Amongst the younger racers, Big Sandy resident Michael Hicks won the Jr. Dragster competition for drivers ages 8-12. Hicks was quick out of the gate and hit a speed of 67.25 mph. Gleason native Lawson Roberts took second place with a speed of 73.9 mph.
In the 13-and-older competition amongst Jr. Dragster drivers, Palmersville's Joey Caldwell was the winner with a speed of 78.81 mph. Kirk Wood, from Linden, was the runner-up with a speed of 79.89 mph.
Racing will resume at the track this weekend with Test and Tune and a Trophy Street competition on Friday evening from 6:30-10 p.m. Gates will open at 4 p.m. on Saturday with time trials beginning at 4:30 p.m.
