Woodland Mills awarded Recovery Act grant

NASHVILLE — Woodland Mills has been approved for a $500,000 Community Devel-opment Block Grant as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to assist in infrastructure improvements.
“I appreciate the additional Recovery Act dollars to enhance the lives of Tennessee citizens and help communities make much needed improvements,” Gov. Phil Bredesen said. “Woodland Mills’ infrastructure project will bolster growth and development in the area, and I’m very pleased our state can partner in this vital financial assistance program.”
The funds will be used for the rehabilitation of 12 residential dwellings. The grant dollars were provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and were allocated under a procedure authorized by the Tennessee General Assembly.
“The Recovery Act CDBG funds will be put to good use in assisting our communities while creating new jobs and retaining current ones,” Community Development commissioner Matt Kisber said. “The building blocks for economic development are simple infrastructure necessities like water systems and road improvements, and CDBG grants help communities meet those basic needs.”
The Recovery Act allocated an additional $1 billion nationwide to the CDBG program for local governments to create suitable living environments, provide decent affordable housing and create economic opportunities, primarily for persons of low and moderate income.
“The additional CDBG funding will help improve the quality of life, grow businesses and create jobs here in the district. We look forward to the many benefits these much needed grants will yield,” state Rep. Judy Barker said.
Allocation of CDBG funds is based on priorities set at local levels where community needs are best known. The CDBG program is administered in Tennessee by the Department of Economic and Community Development.
Among the other area communities awarded grants through the program were:
• Sharon — $188,873 to purchase a new fire truck/pumper for the fire department.
• Tiptonville — $200,000 for improvements to Tiptonville’s sewer treatment plant.
• Trenton — $500,000 for improvements to the Trenton sewer system.
