OCCHS Cheer squad

OCCHS Cheer squad | Obion County Central High School
CHEER SQUAD EXCELS — The varsity cheerleading squad of Obion County Central recently attended UCA Cheer Camp at the University of Tennessee at Martin. The girls stayed three nights in the dorm rooms on campus and participated in various daily activities including cheer, dance and stunt instruction. On the first night, the OC cheerleaders won the spirit banana from the UCA staff which is a daily award every squad fights to receive. This banana symbolizes that Obion County Central’s cheerleaders truly know what it means to have school spirit as well as stand out as the best among many. Every evening the squad was evaluated on their progress. Each night they received a superior ribbon which represented a flawless routine. On the last day, they received first place in the cheer division, second place in dance and the Leadership Award. The Leadership Award is the most coveted award because it is voted upon by other squads at camp. Among those attending were (photo above, front row, from left) sophomores, Chelsea Carter, Kristen Scobey, Carly White, Savannah Snead, Lauren Futhey, Summer London, (middle) and Sadye Storey; juniors, Tori Mitchell, Maghen Clancy, Rachel Laux and Kendal Byassee; sophomores, Lauren Richards and Victoria Stevenson; and (back) seniors, Susan Douglas, Kelsey Reed, Hillary Jones, Hope Burt, Adrienne Devasier, Jerrie Carrington and Chelsea Boyd. The squad also had four seniors who received the All American Award. This award symbolizes that a cheerleader is a top notch cheerleader and excels in all aspects of cheerleading. Not only did these seniors receive the award, but were also asked to submit their application to hopefully become a UCA staff cheerleader. This request is an amazing honor for any girl who receives it. It is not offered to every cheerleader, but to those who stand out to the staff members as girls who have excellent attitudes as well as talent and can present the UCA Organization in a positive way. The girls will go through an interview process in April 2010 in Knoxville to hopefully become part of one of the best cheerleading organizations in the country. Recipients of All American Award were (below, from front) Adrienne Devasier, Jerrie Carrington, Hillary Jones and Hope Burt. “As the coach, I will say that I am the proudest I have ever been for the cheerleaders at Central. I felt honored to be a part of something so great. Our squad truly stood out as one of the best at camp and we’ve got people curious as to what we can do this year on a competition level. Our girls have a goal to receive a bid this year to the National Championship in Orlando, Fla., which is featured on ESPN. I believe they can do it. With hard work, determination and the support of our school and community, we will be able to reach a goal that the seniors have set for themselves for the past four years,” Eva Essary said.
