Charger offense outshines defense in first scrimmage
Charger offense outshines defense in first scrimmage | Westview, DeMarcus Williams, Dyer County Choctaws, Don Coady, Martin, Tennessee, Tanner Spencer,

Finding the hole — Westview running back DeMarcus Williams (right) sees a seam created by the Charger offensive line during scrimmage action against the Dyer County Choctaws on Saturday at the WHS practice field behind the school.
What was supposed to be a football scrimmage looked more like a tennis match with the ball moving regularly and rapidly from one end zone to the other when the Westview Chargers played host to the Dyer County Choctaws on Saturday afternoon at the practice field behind the high school in Martin.
While the offenses were praise-worthy, neither defense had much to brag about when the three-hour exercise was over. The format for the day featured the first string offenses and defenses squaring off followed by a series matching the second string units and then the freshmen squads.
"I don't think we played very well today," WHS head coach Don Coady said. "When the other team scores every time they have the ball, you're going to lose."
Of Westview's four drives by the varsity starters, two ended in touchdowns, one was stalled on downs and another ended with an interception.
A long run by DeMarcus Williams set up the inaugural WHS score by the Chargers' first string, which came on a keeper by quarterback Tanner Spencer.
The second scoring drive by the Chargers' top squad mixed passes to Brian West and Seth Waterfield with runs by Williams. The senior running back punched the ball over the goal line, hauling two defenders with him.
Dyer County used its passing attack from the spread offense to score on all four drives. The Choctaws effectively mixed bubble screens and passes down the sidelines with runs to keep the WHS defense off balance.
The Chargers' second string scored once while keeping Dyer County out of the end zone. Zeick Hicks scored on a bootleg for Westview.
Dyer County's youngest unit scored three times compared to Westview's two scoring drives.
Westview will scrimmage again this Saturday, traveling to  Henderson to take on Chester County. The Chargers will also make their annual pilgrimage to Huntingdon for jamboree action on Aug. 14. The 2009 regular season will begin in earnest when Westview hosts Huntingdon on Aug. 20.
