G'field gets second defensive score, offense remains quiet
G'field gets second defensive score, offense remains quiet | Greenfield High School, Tyler Dunning, Yellowjackets, Greenfield, Tennessee

Splitsville — Greenfield High School running back Tyler Dunning (right) splits between a pair of Middleton defenders during scrimmage action on Friday night. The host Yellowjackets' defense scored the only touchdown of the evening.
With one defensive play, the Greenfield High School Yellowjackets put away the visiting Middleton Tigers, 1-0, in preseason scrimmage action this past Friday night.
The Yellowjackets took the field for the second time in the preseason for a scrimmage. After edging Gibson County’s Pioneers thanks to a defensive score on July 31, the Jackets again turned their defense into offense. Greenfield scored early on an interception return and was able to hold off the Tigers for the remainder of the time to take the win.
Middleton had first possession and picked up a first down on steady ground gains. On first down, however, Jacket Stephen Sawyers picked off a pass near midfield and returned it all the way to the end zone for the only score of the game.
The Tigers’ next possession yielded a three and out and the Jackets took their first turn on offense. Quarterback Ty Smithson connected with Sawyers on the first play for a big gain. In the running game, Greenfield went to Tyler Dunning who picked up a first down on tough runs up the middle. Sawyers swept around the right side of the defense to pick up another first down. Smithson kept the ball for short yardage on two straight plays and threw incomplete to end the drive and turn the ball over to Middleton.
The Tigers again went to the ground and picked up steady gains, but just before the break Cody Worley stepped through and sacked the QB to end Middleton’s momentum.
On its next possession, Greenfield picked up large gains on the turf from Dunning and Jonathan Benson, but the Middleton defense responded and surged and closed down the Jacket running game forcing the home team to hand the ball back over.
Middleton stayed with the running game and recovered three of its own fumbles before finally forfeiting possession to GHS.
With its second unit in, Greenfield found production on the ground, but turned the ball over to the visitors. The Tigers were forced to punt on their next possession and the teams traded punts again before Greenfield took the last possession of the game. Smithson picked up two first downs through the air, but ended the contest by throwing an interception.
The Yellowjackets will have their final preseason outing when they participate in the annual Ken-Tenn Jamboree on Aug. 14. Greenfield will take on Fulton County at 8 on Friday night in South Fulton. The 2009 campaign will kick off for real when the Jackets face the host Dresden Lions in the opening game of the season on Aug. 21.
