Nephew steals thousands from local elderly relatives
A Paducah, Ky. man is in custody after he allegedly took $180,000 from his elderly aunt and uncle, Allie and Milbert Winsett.
According to a press release issued by the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department, 57-year-old Roger Lee Winsett served as power of attorney for his relatives and moved them from their Martin home to his home on Valiant Drive in Paducah, Ky.
After the move, Winsett allegedly made a withdrawal in excess of $150,000 from the couple’s bank in Martin and placed it into his account.
Winsett used the money to purchase a 2009 Lexus for himself and two other vehicles for his ex-wife and stepson using his relative’s money without their consent.
“In the investigation it was determined that Mr. Winsett purchased five rooms of furniture for his new house and was also able to furnish his new office with new furniture. He was also able to make a $55,000 down payment on his new home on Valiant Drive,” according to the release.
Winsett also hired a chauffeur to drive him around town at $100 a day.
Winsett was arrested July 27 for a Class C felony charge of exploitation of the elderly.
He was arraigned in McCracken County Court Aug. 4. According to the court clerk’s office, Winsett’s case was bound over to the grand jury.
McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden credits the work of Det. R.J. Caskey for his efforts in the investigation.
“We often times hear about cases such as this where the exploitaiton of the elderly occur but lacks the evidence for a successful prosecution.
“This agency is very committed in helping to protect the elderly and will do everything in our power to prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.
“This was a complex and complicated investigation performed by Det. Caskey and we appreciate his efforts,” Hayden commented.
The couple has since moved from their nephew’s home to live with a relative in Tennessee.
The furniture and vehicles were seized by the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department.
Winsett is jailed in the McCracken County Detention Center on a $15,000 cash bond.
He is set to appear in McCracken County Circuit Court at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 for an arraignment.
Winsett works as a self-employed counselor in Paducah, Ky.
