Three early goals allow Lady Chargers to cruise to 7-1 win
Three early goals allow Lady Chargers to cruise to 7-1 win | Westview Lady Chargers soccer, Caitlin Campbell, Gibson County Lady Pioneers, Stan Vickers, Martin, Tennessee

Concentrate — Westview sophomore Caitlin Campbell (center) controls a pass to the middle in traffic before firing a shot into the net for the Lady Chargers' fourth goal of the game in their 7-1 home win over the visiting Gibson County Lady Pioneers.
MARTIN, Tenn. — It didn't take the Westview Lady Chargers long to take control in their 7-1 win over the visiting Gibson County Lady Pioneers Thursday at the MTD Soccer Complex.
Westview held a comfortable 3-0 advantage after seven minutes and was never pressed.
"We came out and scored those three goals quickly and I thought we might really blow them out, but we kind of let up after the third goal, which is a bad habit," Westview head coach Stan Vickers said. "We did come back and get two more before the half and that picked things up."
Just over three minutes into the action, midfielder Caitlin Campbell pushed the ball directly down the middle of the field with little bother by the Gibson County defenders. Campbell fired a hard low shot just inside the left post to set off the first Westview celebration.
Just over six minutes into play, a hustle play by Campbell set up the second Lady Charger goal. The lanky sophomore raced to the end line to save a ball last touched by Westview from going out of bounds. Campbell slid and simultaneously sent the ball back in front of the goal where senior Amanda Crowe blasted a shot past the GC keeper for a 2-0 Westview lead.
"Campbell was outstanding today. Along with Kelsey Hauhe, they controlled the game," Vickers said. "Our freshmen we inserted in the line-up were also great contributors today. We're going to have to have them playing well because we're heading into the meat of our schedule."
At the seven-minute mark, another WHS senior made a play as Evelyn Daniel rocketed a shot toward the Gibson County goal. Keeper Lauren Barkley initially stopped the shot, but the force of the blast by Daniel allowed it to bounce off Barkley's hands and roll on into the net for a 3-0 Lady Charger lead.
With 15 minutes left in the half, WHS nearly added to its lead when Kayla Gutherie followed in a shot and scrambled to get a foot on the ball while prone on the turf with Barkley battling to gain control of the ball.
The Lady Chargers finally extended their lead to 4-0 at the 33:30-mark. Daniel crossed the ball from the left side into the penalty box, where Campbell stayed with it in heavy traffic and finally got a clean shot away and into the goal.
The Lady Chargers weren't finished in the first half, notching a goal in stoppage time. A centering pass off the foot of Marissa Morales eventually led to Gutherie tracking down the rebound and firing a shot inside the post for a 5-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Campbell added another goal at the 54-minute mark. She again cruised down the middle, this time firing away from 20 yards out to give Westview a 6-0 lead.
Gibson County got its lone goal when the Lady Pioneers flipped the field and Secily Scott fired a low shot from the right side past WHS keeper Makenzie Vincent for a 6-1 score 58 minutes into play.
The game's final goal came when a Campbell shot ricocheted off the left post and Morales was in position to control the carom and fire a shot into the right corner of the goal for a 7-1 score.
