TRENTON, Tenn. — In a battle of winless teams, one team has to leave the field with its first “W.”
Though the Greenfield Yellowjackets put the first points on the board and made it look easy, they were stopped from reaching the end zone for the remainder of the contest and the Peabody Golden Tide prevailed, 16-6, this past Friday night in Trenton.
Not only was a first win at stake, but a coveted District 14-A victory remained in the balance and the Yellowjackets took this into consideration on their first offensive series.
Greenfield head coach Jason Rodehaver made a change at the signal caller position, putting junior Dalton Potts in at quarterback for the first time this season. The Jackets got the ball into scoring position two other times in the first half, but turnovers ended the drives, including one tipped pass that was picked off and returned 100 yards for a game-changing play.
After Greenfield received the opening kickoff, Potts took the first snap, ran the ball around the right side, sustained a hit out of bounds and took an extra 15 yards on the personal foul penalty. Ty Smithson followed the big gain with a 15-yard gain of his own and Potts picked up 23 yards on two carries deep into Peabody territory. Down at the 7, however, Adrian Buchanan sacked Potts for a seven-yard loss. His next pass fell incomplete and on third-and-goal, Austin Coleman intercepted the ball.
A penalty pushed the Tide back seven yards to start them on their own 7 and Jerry Rogers' first pass missed its mark. On second down, Chris McMullen pulled A.J. Collier down for a four-yard loss. Collier gained two on third-and-long, but Peabody was forced to punt on fourth down.
At the Tide 38, Tyler Dunning picked up 15 yards up the middle. Dunning gained three yards on first down, but was met in the backfield for a three-yard loss. On third-and-long, Potts' pass found Steven Sawyers open for a crucial 21-yard gain and Potts' ran in a one-yard touchdown for the game's first score. The extra point failed, but Greenfield took a 6-0 lead with 5:57 left in the first quarter.
Peabody took possession on its own 41 and picked up three yards from Collier on first down. Rogers gained 15 on a keeper and Collier followed with a 13-yard carry. Qua Johnson picked up a yard on first down and gained 17 on his next two carries. Rogers found Corbin Branson on a nine-yard pass and Collier ran the final nine yards for the score. Matthew Nicholas tacked on the extra point and the home team nabbed a 7-6 lead with 1:44 left in the first quarter.
Greenfield took possession and held it through the end of the opening frame. Starting the second quarter on the Peabody 23, a pass from Potts that was headed towards Sawyers in the end zone was tipped and intercepted by Collier and returned 100 yards for a touchdown. Nicholas' kick put the Tide ahead 14-6 with 11:37 left before halftime.
Greenfield was forced to punt on its next possession and Potts intercepted a Rogers' pass on Peabody's ensuing possession, but the visitors turned the ball over on downs. Taking the last possession of the half, the Tide picked up steady gains down to the Greenfield 8, but missed a 27-yard field goal to end the half.
The teams swapped punts in the third and the defenses continued to take center stage in the fourth. Neither team generated any offense to reach the opponent’s end zone.
Peabody’s Mark Hines sacked Potts in the end zone for a safety with 3:23 left in the game to make the final score 16-6 in favor of the Tide.
Collier had 73 rushing yards, a touchdown and a 100-yard interception return. Potts rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown and threw for 108 yards.
Greenfield will now travel to face winless Bruceton. The game kicks off 7:30 Friday night.
