Dresden defense vise-tight in shutting down Bruceton
Dresden defense vise-tight in shutting down Bruceton | Dresden Lions football, Colin Kanehl, Bruceton Tigers, Zach Jolley, Dale Hutcherson, Dresden, Bruceton, Tennessee

BRUCETON, Tenn. — It wasn't necessarily a thing of beauty suitable for framing and admiring eternally, but it was definitely a win for Dresden.
Dresden's defense shut down the winless Bruceton Tigers en route to a 35-0 District 13-A victory Friday night in Bruceton, but the Lion offense struggled to get its passing attack clicking.
"We have to go back and go to work," Dresden head coach Scott Hewett said. "We still have time to work on things. They (Bruceton) didn't have a lot of offense. I admire them for continuing to fight. My hat's off to them."
After picking apart the Gibson County secondary the week before, the Dresden air attack was out of synch. Quarterback Dale Hutcherson, who was nearly perfect against Gibson County, hit on just 8-of-21 passes for 107 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
The Lion ground game got things started for Dresden (4-1, 1-1 District 13-A) in the first quarter. Hutcherson picked up 24 yards on an option keeper on the first snap. Zach Jolley had an 18-yard run and then added the 9-yard touchdown romp. Tyler Morefield, who was perfect on all five PAT tries, split the uprights for a 7-0 lead with just 2:10 gone off the clock.
Dresden forced a punt, and Daniel Harris returned it 60 yards to paydirt, but a penalty, one of 10 whistled against the Lions, negated the score. Bruceton was called for 11 penalties overall.
Starting from the BHS 41 after the flag, the Lions lit the scoreboard on the first play from scrimmage. Hutcherson found Colin Kanehl wide open in the seam for what turned into a 41-yard TD strike and a 14-0 lead with 8:02 left in the first frame.
Bruceton (0-4, 0-2 District 13-A) picked up two of its seven total first downs on its next drive, but a Tiger fumble was recovered by DHS sophomore D.J. Ellis to end the threat.
Two penalties and a sack stalled the ensuing Lion drive.
The teams swapped punts for the bulk of the second quarter before Harris picked off a pass, giving DHS excellent field position at the Tiger 32 and a chance to grab the momentum with 1:16 remaining in the half.
An illegal shift penalty negated a long pass to Chris Workman, and the Tiger defense forced a turnover on downs, leaving the Dresden lead at 14-0 at the half.
In the third, the Lions turned the ball over on downs, threw an interception and lost a fumble, but the DHS defense didn't allow Bruceton to take advantage.
Finally, with 1:29 to play in the third quarter, Jolley broke through the line and raced 62 yards for the TD to push the Lions' advantage to 21-0.
"Zach runs hard. He didn't have many big holes to run through tonight," Hewett noted.
On the next Tiger punt early in the fourth, Harris watched the ball take a high bounce, snatched it out of the air at the Lion 42 and blazed 58 yards to the end zone for a 28-0 lead.
A 29-yard completion to Kanehl set up Hutcherson's 12-yard scoring run with 1:49 left in the game to close out scoring in the Lions' 35-0 win.
Dresden will next visit Halls. Kickoff is at 7 on Friday night.
