MARTIN, Tenn. — Westview’s defense recorded five interceptions, returning two for touchdowns, to lead the Chargers to a 28-12 homecoming victory over Memphis Trezevant Friday night at Graham Stadium.
Chevy Taylor rushed for 112 yards on 17 carries, and quarterback Tanner Spencer ran for two scores, as Westview won its second straight contest after starting the season 0-4.
Bears QB Cameron Mayfield connected on 18-of-36 pass attempts for 204 yards, but his five picks, combined with Trezevant’s 155 penalty yards, doomed any upset hopes.
Brian West’s 97-yard interception return for paydirt with 3:35 remaining sealed the victory for the Chargers, who have an open date next Friday night before returning to action Oct. 9, at home, against District 13-AA foe Gibson County.
“I thought our defensive front played well and pretty much shut their run game down,” Westview head coach Don Coady said. “We got five picks tonight, so that’s a good job by our secondary against a very talented, athletic team.”
The Chargers trailed 6-0, but scored 21 straight points in the second quarter, highlighted by a Barkley Legens 20-yard interception return for a touchdown. Legens, who was suffering from flu-like symptoms, had only moments earlier returned from the locker room after receiving treatment.
Taylor, who also was suffering from similar symptoms, wasn’t slowed by the sickness either as his two first down runs, along with a 14-yard jaunt by Abraham Haddad, set up Spencer’s second TD run of the quarter, this one an 18-yard run to paydirt with 4:01 to play in the first half. Landon Prather’s point-after kick split the uprights as the Chargers took a 21-6 lead.
But, the Bears would not lie down quietly.
Having already connected on a 25-yard TD pass in the first quarter, Mayfield and wide receiver Randy Chambers added another score with 21 seconds remaining in the half when Chambers, who had eight grabs for 128 yards in the game, made the catch on a crossing route up the middle and raced across the goal line for his second TD on the night.
However, West broke up Mayfield’s conversion pass attempt to keep Westview on top by a critical two scores, 21-12.
The Charger secondary began to flex its muscle in the second half to keep the Bears out of the end zone.
DeMarcus Williams intercepted a pass at his own 1-yard line on Trezevant’s first possession, and then on its second possession, Tevin Evans broke up a pass at his goal line on a fourth-and-eight attempt.
On the Bears’ first possession of the final quarter, they again reached scoring territory with comeback hopes. But, as Mayfield dropped back to pass from the Westview 9-yard line, Legens shot around the left side and nailed him for a sack and knocked the ball loose. Denzel Cook pounced on it for WHS to end the scoring threat.
Trezevant reached the Charger 12 on its next possession before West’s pick and 97-yard TD return blew the game open.
Two Bears possessions and two more picks, one by Will Thompson and another by Evans, wrapped up the victory for Westview.
