Yellowjackets use defense to break into win column
Yellowjackets use defense to break into win column | Greenfield Yellowjackets, Dalton Potts, Dakota Bills, Tyler Dunning, Jonathan Benson, Bruceton Tigers, Ryan Ernsberger, Jason Rodehaver, Greenfield, Tennessee

Crush — Under heavy pressure from the Yellowjackets, including (from left) Dalton Potts, Dakota Bills, Tyler Dunning and Jonathan Benson, Bruceton punter Ryan Ernsberger loses control of the ball near his end zone.
BRUCETON, Tenn. —The huge gust of wind blowing from Bruceton on Friday night was the enormous sigh of relief released by the Greenfield Yellowjackets after they blanked the host Bruceton Tigers, 14-0.
The shutout gave Greenfield its first win of the 2009 season, snapping a string of five consecutive losses dating back to Week 9 of last season. Bruceton (0-5, 0-2 District 13-A) was the last victim in 2008, losing 54-20 to the Yellowjackets. The winless Tigers saw their losing streak stretch to 16 games.
"It was another outstanding defensive effort. Our defense played great and our offense played well in spurts. We got the monkey off our back," a relieved Jacket head coach Jason Rodehaver said after the win.
Greenfield (1-4, 0-2 District 14-A) lit the scoreboard twice in the second quarter and let its defense do the rest. Jacket special teams even contributed half the scoring.
Bruceton managed just 46 total yards of offense with 15 plays for no gain or lost yardage. The Jackets intercepted two passes and recovered one fumble, although Bruceton put the ball on the ground six times.
"Brody Cogburn, Chris McMullen, Josh Rawls, Ben Woods, Logan Rowlett — I can't say enough about how dominant they were at the line of scrimmage," Rodehaver praised.
With Dalton Potts getting the nod again at quarterback, GHS collected 265 yards of offense, including 99 through the air. Senior running back Tyler Dunning took over late with strong runs to keep both the chains and the clock moving. Dunning finished with 134 rushing yards on 23 carries. He also caught two passes for 25 yards.
Both offenses swapped punts in the first quarter.
On its final drive of the first frame, BHS managed its only two first downs of the first half — one via a GHS penalty, but again the Jackets forced a punt.
Taking over at their own 36, Potts capped the five-play drive by finding Brady Medling racing down a seam on the right side for a 40-yard touchdown strike. Zack Grebe, a transfer student from Oregon who has spent more time on the soccer field than the gridiron, booted the PAT for a 7-0 Jacket led with 9:40 left in the half.
Then the Jackets picked off a pass, but had to punt after a 3-and-out. Bruceton couldn't pick up a first down either. With Tiger punter Ryan Ernsberger near his own goal line, the Jackets swarmed in and forced him to bobble the ball. It landed in the arms of Jonathan Benson who ran four yards for the TD. Grebe's kick was the half's final point as the Jackets led 14-0.
Greenfield threatened to add an insurance score with under three minutes left, but a fumble at the Tiger 3 ended the drive and kept the final score at 14-0.
