Holder's big second quarter helps Mustangs run by DHS
Holder's big second quarter helps Mustangs run by DHS | Dresden Lions, Kennon Holder, Brittian Thompson, Jorge Perez, Huntingdon Mustangs, Daniel Harris, Dale Hutcherson, Dresden, Huntingdon, Tennessee

Turn it up — Dresden's Daniel Harris, here returning a punt vs. Bruceton, scored both Lion TDs, including an 85-yard kickoff return, in a 41-14 loss to Huntingdon. Photo by Stephanie Sturgis
What started so well, certainly didn't end well for the Dresden Lions in a 41-14 road loss to the host Huntingdon Mustangs Friday night.
The Lions took the opening kickoff and blazed their way down the field for a score. The Mustangs then scored the next 41 points, including three touchdowns by Kennon Holder in the second quarter, to cruise to the district victory.
The loss drops Dresden's overall record to 4-3 and its district mark to 1-2. Huntingdon improves to 5-2 on the season and 3-0 in District 13-A.
Things looked bright for the Lions early. Starting at its own 19, the Black and Gold put together a 12-play drive that ate up nearly half of the first quarter. Dresden moved the chains six times in the drive.
Quarterback Dale Hutcherson hit on all three of his passes in the possession, finding Colin Kanehl for a 17-yard gain and hitting Daniel Harris twice. Harris' second catch covered 12 yards and posted the game's first points on the scoreboard. Alex Robinson's kick boosted Dresden's lead to 7-0 with 6:32 remaining in the first quarter.
Huntingdon responded with its first drive of the game. HHS running backs Holder and Brittian Thompson alternated carries for most of the drive, but it was QB Bam Melton crossing the goal line at the end of an 11-yard run. Place-kicker Jorge Perez added the PAT to knot the score at 7-all with 1:16 remaining in the opening quarter.
Dresden didn't get a chance to strike back as a fumbled pitch on its next drive handed the Mustangs excellent field position at the DHS 23. A 3-yard Holder run gave the Mustangs the lead and Perez added the kick for a 14-7 score with 10:45 left in the half.
The Lions were unable to pick up a first down on their ensuing possession, but the Mustangs didn't have the same problem.
Huntingdon needed just three plays to light the scoreboard. A 40-yard Holder run did the trick and Perez' kick boosted the score to 21-7 with 7:35 in the half.
The Lions then put together another strong drive, marching all the way to the HHS 5-yard line. Dresden converted a key fourth down with a 24-yard completion to Isaac Butler.
On first-and-goal from the 9, Jacob Huestis caught a four-yard pass before Zach Jolley was stopped for no gain. Hutcherson's passes on third and fourth downs fell incomplete.
The Mustangs put the nail in the coffin with a quick drive to end the half. The 95-yard march included both of Melton's completions in the game. The first was a 57-yard strike to Thompson, and the second was a 23-yarder to Holder for the TD at the horn. Perez' kick put Huntingdon up 28-7 at halftime.
The Mustangs scored on the opening drive of the third frame with Melton racing 20 yards for the TD. A pass missed its mark on the two-point attempt, leaving Huntingdon on top 34-7.
After a Dresden punt, the Mustangs scored their final TD on a 53-yard Thompson run. The Perez kick provided a 41-7 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Harris showed his own athletic skills racing 85 yards for the score. Robinson's point after kick was the final point in the Lions' 41-14 loss to Huntingdon.
DHS will host Riverside with kickoff at 7:30 on Friday night.
