SHARON, Tenn. – The Sharon Junior High Eagles have officially put last year's record behind them.
In defeating the visiting Henry Junior High Pirates, 38-29, this past Thursday night, the Sharon boys ended last year's season-long losing streak. The Lady Eagles weren’t as fortunate, falling to the visitors, 43-16.
Blake Turnbow opened the game with a bucket for the Eagles and Hunter Beal tossed in a layup to give Sharon a 4-0 lead. Ian Edwards broke the momentum and kept the visitors close with seven first-quarter points, but the scoring combination of Hunter Beal and Turnbow gave the Eagles a 12-9 edge at the end of one.
Edwards tied the score at 13 and a basket from Cotton Smith gave the Pirates their only lead, 15-13, midway through the second quarter, but Parker Beal knocked down a three and his brother Hunter Beal put in seven more points to give Sharon a 24-18 halftime lead.
Both teams put up six points each in the third and Hunter Beal and Turnbow scored four each in the fourth to power the Eagles to a 38-29 win.
Hunter Beal turned in a 23-point performance and Turnbow scored 10.
In the girls' game, Sharon trailed by two at the break, but was held to just three second-half points and fell 43-16.
Catherine Mathews found success with her jumper in the first quarter and dueled with Henry's Whitny Rawls to keep Sharon close, 8-7, after one.
Rawls continued to lead Henry in the second stanza, but Sharon found production from Makelle Milligan and Paige Permenter in addition to Mathews and trailed 15-13 at the half.
Sharon was held scoreless in the third, however, as Rawls posted 16 of Henry's 18 points and, though the Lady Eagles got one of two from the line from Permenter at the 2:35 mark in the fourth, Henry put up 10 points to prevail, 43-16.
Rawls had 36 of her team's 43 points. Mathews led Sharon with 10.
