This past Thursday night, the Dresden Middle School Lions traveled to Gleason and left with a pair of wins, but for all four squads, scoring was not always easy to come by.
In the first game, the Lady Lions were held scoreless in the first quarter yet held Gleason to single-digit scoring in three of four quarters to win, 29-19.
In the boys game, the Lions overcame a late scoring drought to stop Gleason, 40-18.
Neither team could buy a basket in the first quarter of the girls game until Ashley Hargrove drilled a jumper with a minute remaining to give the Lady Dawgs a 2-0 lead after one.
Calay Smith and Bailee Esch put up two baskets for Gleason for a 6-0 advantage, but with 2:15 left in the half, Amy McAlpin broke the Dresden silence. She added two free throws and when Carrie Hatchel hit a layup with under a minute, the visitors tied the score, 6-6, at the half.
Dresden continued the scoring in the third and used an 11-0 run to build a 17-6 lead. Lady Bulldog Rachel Harrison was fouled at the buzzer and hit both free throws to make the score 17-8 in favor of the visitors.
Harrison started the fourth with a three-point play and added a jumper to cut the lead to 17-13. Behind six points from McAlpin, Dresden built a 10-point lead and took a 10-point win, 29-19.
McAlpin led the Lady Lions with 12 points. Harrison had eight for Gleason.
In the second game, the Lions held the Bulldogs to single-digit point totals in all four quarters despite not scoring in the fourth to win, 40-18.
Behind three points each by Brian Scott and Caleb Davidson, DMS led 10-3 at the end of one.
Scott and Davidson continued to lead Dresden in the second quarter with five points each and helped DMS carry a 24-7 advantage at the break.
Austin Daniel put up six in the third and the Lions scored 16 points to Gleason's five to increase the lead to 40-12. Though Dresden didn't score in the fourth, Gleason was limited to six points in a 40-18 loss.
Scott led Dresden with 12 points. Daniel had 10. Dakota Parsons was high scorer for Gleason with six.
