Jackson, Tenn. – Playing on Halloween night, the Westview Lady Chargers didn't receive any treats from the talented Madison Lady Mustangs and were defeated 3-0 in Sectional round play Saturday night.
The loss brought an end to the Lady Chargers' season and denied them the program's first-ever trip to the state tournament. Madison will play undefeated Christian Academy of Knoxville in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night in Chattanooga.
"We played hard and never gave up," Westview head coach Stan Vickers said, after conceding Madison was the most talented team his Lady Chargers (10-5) had faced this season. "This was a learning experience. We've never made it this far."
The Mustangs used pinpoint passing to maintain heavy pressure on the WHS defense and goalkeeper Macy Vincent.
Madison (17-1-1) needed less than three minutes to score the only goal it would need. Lidia Smith took a pass from Kelley Peters and fired a low shot from the right side that eluded Vincent for a 1-0 Mustang lead.
With just over 18 minutes played, Madison doubled its lead when Amber Elmore lifted a high, sharply-angled shot over the fingertips of a leaping Vincent and into the goal.
The third Mustang goal came at the 22-minute mark. A shot caromed off the cross bar, and the rebound rattled around in heavy traffic in front of the net, eluding both Vincent and Westview defenders' attempts to clear. Finally, Peters banged a shot by Vincent for a 3-0 Madison cushion.
From that point, the Mustangs got shots, but couldn't blast one past the WHS goalie. Vincent made 34 total saves. Westview's offense took 13 shots.
"Macy (Vincent) played another one of her awesome games. She's an all-state player in my book," Vickers said.
The WHS coach also praised the work of his seniors.
"Nicole (Drake), Amanda (Crowe) and Ashley (Bynum) all played excellent defense tonight. They gave all they could and they're going to be missed," Vickers added. "Senior Evelyn Daniel at midfield played as well tonight as she has all season. She's another one that will be missed."
The efforts of Kelsey Hauhe and Regan Ward on the defensive end and Kayla Gutherie on offense also were noted.
Other seniors in their final game were Kyeongmee Kim, Amy Spence and Kelsey Wiley.
