Greenfield girls hold back Jr. Lady Lions' rally attempt
Greenfield girls hold back Jr. Lady Lions' rally attempt | Greenfield Junior High, Austin Pence, Dresden Junior Lions, Austin Daniel, Junior Yellowjackets, Greenfield, Dresden, Tennessee

Falling just short in an attempt at revenge, the Dresden Middle School Lady Lions staged a strong fourth-quarter comeback, but succumbed to the Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets for the second time this season, 36-33, this past Thursday night in Greenfield.
The Dresden boys got back on the winning track with a 46-24 win over the host Jackets.
In the girls game, Greenfield’s McCall Scates put up the first deuce of the night for the home team, but Kailey Martin quickly answered with a basket for Dresden. Scates tossed in a free throw, but Carrie Hatchel put up six straight points to give Dresden an 8-3 lead. Sierra Replogle put two more points on the board for the Lady Yellowjackets, but Aubrey Riggs and Amy McAlpin went two of three from the line to help the visitors to an 11-5 lead after one.
The Lady Yellowjackets started the second quarter on an 8-0 tear fueled by added aggression on defense. Behind baskets from Scates, Brittany Peoples, Kalee Kesterson and Kendall Cook, Greenfield raced to a 13-11 lead. McAlpin broke the run by knocking down a pair of free throws — Dresden’s only two points of the quarter — and tying the game at 13 with 2:15 left on the clock, but the Lady Yellowjackets finished out the half on a 4-0 run and led 17-13 at the break.
Peoples opened the third with a basket, but scoring proved to be elusive for both teams as Greenfield took a 6-4 edge and a 23-17 lead into the final frame.
McAlpin put up the first two points of the fourth and was countered with a basket from Peoples. Scates banked in a three from the top of the key to give Greenfield a nine-point cushion, but Hatchel went in untouched for a layup at the 2:50 mark to cut the lead to seven, 30-23, and shift momentum over to Dresden’s side. With both teams in the bonus, McAlpin hit four of four from the stripe. Kesterson made good on another layup, but Martin connected from long distance to slice the lead to two, 32-30, with 1:27 left. McAlpin missed the front end of a one and one and Ashton Pence hit two of two to increase Greenfield’s lead to four, 34-30.
Peoples made a crucial steal and layup to increase the lead, 36-30, but Martin demonstrated the hot hand from downtown again to cut the lead to three, 36-30, with 20.5 seconds remaining. Holding the home team and getting the ball back for the last possession of the game, however, Dresden did not get a shot off and the Lady Yellowjackets held on to win, 36-33.
Peoples led Greenfield with 11 points. Scates scored nine. McAlpin was high scorer for Dresden with 11.
In the second contest, both teams started slowly, but Dresden proved to be too much in the end and took a 46-24 win.
Colton McAlister put up the first two points of the game for the home team, but Austin Daniel and Brian Scott scored eight straight to put Dresden ahead 8-2 after the first quarter.
The Lions increased the lead to 15-2, before the Yellowjackets scored five in the second and trailed 18-7 at the half.
The combined scoring efforts of Austin Pence and Tyler Hoke paced Greenfield in the third and the home team found itself behind 32-18 after putting up 11 points to Dresden’s 14, but the Lions pulled away in the fourth, holding the Yellowjackets to six and taking the 46-24 victory.
Daniel led Dresden with 12. Pence and Hoke had five each for Greenfield.
