| Westview boys come up just short despite Lloyd's hot fourth quarter |

Jacob Lloyd lit up the nets for Westview’s last eight points, but couldn’t quite make it 11 as his last-second attempt to seal a comeback over the Humboldt Vikings fell just short Tuesday night in Martin.
In a contest that saw the Vikings own a lead in three out of four quarters, Lloyd caught fire in the final frame and put up 14 of his game-high 22, but with 2.7 seconds remaining and Westview needing to go the length of the court, Lloyd’s half-court heave missed the mark and Humboldt escaped with a 58-57 victory.
In the girls game, the host Lady Chargers’ hot start led to a 66-41 season-opening win.
Behind baskets from Lloyd and Dylan Gardner, the Chargers began the game with a 6-0 lead. Tevin Bryson led the Viking charge with four points and Devonte Pirtle tossed in a shot from long distance to cut the lead to four — 11-7 — with 3:30 left. Lloyd went coast to coast for a layup and Gardner and Jonathan Jones knocked down threes to give Westview a 16-11 lead after one.
Setting a fierce pace from the get go of the second quarter, the Vikings came storming back and with 5:36 remaining before halftime, the score was knotted at 20. In a back-and-forth struggle, the visitors took a 30-29 lead on a basket from Darren Dunbar and scored the next four points to increase the lead, 34-29. A layup from Gardner broke the run, but a 3-pointer from Antonio Brooks sent the Vikings to the locker room with a 37-31 lead.
The tempo slowed considerably in the third as Brooks opened with a three and Evans answered with a basket to make the score 40-33. Lloyd was whistled for two charges on drives to the basket, and Humboldt slowly built a double-digit lead while holding the Chargers to just seven total points for the quarter. The home team entered the final quarter with a 49-38 deficit, but it was a deficit that Lloyd almost single-handedly erased.
With just under three minutes remaining in the contest, Will Thompson completed a 3-point play and the Viking lead was cut to eight at 55-47. Thompson and Quan Campbell traded baskets and the lead stood at 57-49 with 1:40 on the clock. Lloyd knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the lead to six, 57-51, and nailed two 3-pointers to tie the contest. With 4.1 seconds remaining, however, Lendale Martin was fouled by Lloyd and was sent to the line. He hit one of two, but the Chargers still had to go the length of the court and Lloyd’s half-court shot came up short as Humboldt held on for the 58-57 win.
Brooks was high scorer for the visitors with 14. Bryson put up 10. Lloyd led the Chargers with 22 points. Gardner scored 16.
In the first contest of the night, the Westview Lady Chargers had little trouble putting Humboldt away, 66-41.
Getting off to a 10-0 start, the home team allowed the Lady Vikings just one basket from Keisha King while putting up 14 points for a 14-2 lead at the end of one.
The Lady Vikings got five from Dominique Shivers and Patra Hubbard to open the second, but Westview garnered two 3-pointers from Amber Rechis and Sara Olds to open up a 24-10 lead. The home team entered the bonus and increased the lead to 30-10, but Humboldt put up the last five points of the quarter to trim Westview’s lead to 30-15 at the half.
Rechis and Grace Ann Swaim provided the bulk of the Westview scoring in the third with eight and six points, respectively, and after three frames, the Lady Charger lead grew to 21 at 46-25.
Rechis continued to rain threes in the fourth by putting up two in a row. Olds added another to keep the streak going. Though Humboldt’s floor leader Hubbard knocked down a trio of threes and had 12 points for the quarter, the Lady Vikings couldn’t dig themselves out of the early hole they’d fallen into and took a 66-41 loss.
Rechis led all scorers with 23 points. Grace Ann Swaim scored 13. Hubbard put up 19 for Humboldt. |
