The Westview Chargers gave first-year head coach JB Suiter his inaugural win at the helm of the boys basketball team by stretching out their lead in the second half on the way to a 73-60 victory over the host Dresden Lions Monday night.
Westview's girls improved their record to 4-0 with a 79-43 victory over the Dresden Lady Lions.
Suiter was an assistant coach with the WHS boys team under former head coach Brian Haskins, who left the Chargers to join The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball staff. The win evened the Westview boys record to 1-1, while the Lions fall to 1-2 on the young season.
Suiter's Chargers out-scored Dresden 22-14 in the third quarter to open up the gap. Leading 32-22 when the third quarter got under way, Westview saw its lead trimmed to five points at 36-31 when Lion Alex Robinson drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing with 4:26 to play in the quarter. From that point, the Chargers took over and reeled off an 18-5 run to end the frame. The Chargers forced Dresden to commit turnovers in three of four consecutive possessions to ignite the run. Antonio Hogard had a steal and layup and added a trey to extend the lead to double digits at 43-31. A driving layup by Jazell Baker with an assist by Will Thompson stretched the Chargers' advantage to 18 points, 54-36, for the final points of the third quarter.
In the fourth, Dresden scrambled to slice the gap back to a dozen points. Lion center Tyler McPeak was busy early in the frame. McPeak scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the final stanza. Dresden's Daniel Harris scored on a baseline move to cut the WHS lead to 62-50 with 4:05 left in the contest.
The Chargers responded with a 6-0 run to stretch the lead back to 18 at 68-50. Jacob Lloyd drove in for a layup. Dillon Gardner scored on a fastbreak and Thompson his two free throws in the span. A Lloyd 3-pointer provided Westview with its largest lead of the evening of 19 points at 71-52 with 2:31 to seal Suiter's' first win. Lloyd finished with a game-high 23 points including 11 points in the fourth quarter.
The Lions stayed close early in the game thanks to a pair of clutch 3-pointers by Jacob Vallee. Both Vallee treys slowed the Chargers' momentum. His first tied the score at 9-all. At the end of the first quarter, Westview led 17-14.
In the second quarter, the Chargers nearly doubled Dresden's output, posting 15 points to the Lions' 8 for a 32-22 Westview halftime lead. Hogard pitched in five of his 12 points in the second frame.
In the girls game, the Lady Chargers connected on 30-of-41 free throws en route to its fourth win. Westview had three players score in double-digits, led by Amber Rechis' 29 points.
The Lady Lions were saddled with foul trouble, and struggled to get shots against the Westview defense.
Rechis knocked in eight points in the first quarter, nearly matching the entire DHS squad's nine points in the frame.
Westview was on top 19-9 heading into the second quarter. Dresden got hot to the start the second stanza, trimming the WHS lead to four at 20-16 with four points from Allie Phillips and a trey by Amy Reddick. From that point, Westview out-scored the Lady Lions 59-27 through the game.
The Lady Chargers were in front 35-22 at halftime and led 61-28 after three quarters.
Dresden's Alex Glisson got hot after halftime, pouring in 15 of her team-high 20 points.
