Dresden reins in Mustang rallies
Dresden reins in Mustang rallies | Dresden Lady Lions, Kristen Childress, Huntingdon Fillies, Huntingdon Mustangs, Dresden Lions, Dillon Matlock, Daniel Harris, Dresden, Huntingdon, Tennessee

Out of the way — Dresden's Kristen Childress drives in from the wing during the Lady Lions' 50-37 win over the host Huntingdon Fillies Tuesday night. Childress finished with 7 points as Dresden improved to 3-0 in District 13-A. Photo by Sara Rei
Withstanding several comeback attempts, the Dresden Lions swept Huntingdon by double digits in both contests this past Tuesday night in Huntingdon.
In the first contest, the Lady Lions trailed by two points at the half, but used strong third-quarter point production to pull away, 50-37, while the Lions made it a district road sweep with fourth-quarter free throws for a 65-55 win.
The first quarter in the girls contest featured both squads trading baskets, but with just under three and a half minutes remaining, Amy Reddick knocked down a three to give Dresden a 9-7 lead. The Fillies ended the quarter on a 7-0 run, however, and led 14-9.
Mikelsey Jordan put up the first four points of the second quarter for Huntingdon and extended the run to 11-0.
Jesica Parsley hit a three with 5:02 left to end the HHS run and start a new one for the Lady Lions. Courtney McMillin, Allie Phillips and Kristen Childress put up baskets to tie the score at 18, but Jordan halted the Dresden streak with a layup to put the Fillies in front, 20-18. McMillin capitalized on a 3-point play to give Dresden a 21-20 edge with 2:07 left before halftime. The visitors entered the bonus and Parsley hit one of two free throws to increase the lead to 22-20. Jamie Bailey answered with two free throws and Kristen Lowe knocked down a pair from the line to put the home team ahead 24-22 at the half.
Alex Glisson opened the third with a shot for DHS inside to tie the score at 24. Parsley connected from long distance and led the visitors to a 35-28 advantage with just over three minutes remaining. McMillin missed the free throw on a three-point play attempt, but Parsley was fouled on the rebound. Her free throws gave Dresden a 17-5 scoring edge for the quarter and a 39-29 lead after three frames.
The Lady Lions continued to control the pace in the fourth and Huntingdon had to resort to sending them to the line. Dresden delivered and came away with a 50-37 victory.
Parsley led Dresden with 19 points. McMillin scored 12. Jordan put up 12 for the Fillies.
In the second contest, Dresden saw a large lead nearly evaporate, but knocked down free throws in the fourth to win, 65-55.
Opening on a breakneck pace, the Lions allowed the home team a three-point play from Josh McMackin and a free throw from Dylan Clifft, but otherwise out-scored the Mustangs 20-4 behind two threes from Dillon Matlock and seven points from Tyler McPeak.
Huntingdon woke up in the second quarter, however, and Clifft took over by scoring eight and cutting the DHS lead to 23-14 with 4:12 left before the half. Matlock hit another three and McPeak scored inside to push the lead to 28-14 and the Lions held onto a 31-19 advantage at the break.
Mustang Corbin Jordan caught fire from long distance in the third and on a 3-point play from Clifft, the home team trailed by just six, 40-34, with 1:16 left in the third. Baskets from Tyler Hawks and Harris pushed the Lions’ lead back to double digits at 44-34 after three.
The Mustangs continued to fire up threes in the fourth and with 51.8 seconds remaining, trailed 61-55. The Lions countered by knocking down free throws, however, and with both teams scoring 21 for the quarter, the Lions took a 65-55 win.
Matlock led Dresden with 19 points. McPeak scored 17. Jordan and Clifft put up 14 each for the Mustangs.
