GREENFIELD, Tenn. — The Perry County boys smelled a season sweep of the host Yellowjackets, but a Wes Clark last-second miracle knocked the wind out of the Viking sails last Tuesday night in Greenfield.
The visitors managed to erase a double-digit deficit late in the fourth quarter and tie the score at 56. With nine seconds left, the Vikes had possession, but when a three-pointer from Garrett Hill missed the target, Clark had just enough time to take a short outlet pass and heave the ball three-fourths of the court where it swished in the Jacket basket and gave them a 59-56 win.
The Greenfield girls did earn a season sweep of the visiting Perry County Lady Vikings, winning 51-39.
The Greenfield boys opened with eight straight points from Graham Perkins and a deuce from Heath Crouse. Taylor Dill broke the streak with a 3-point play and Dray Mercer also made good on a 3-point play for PC, but the home team still led 17-10 after one quarter.
Point totals were equal in the second quarter and the Yellow-jackets went into the half holding a 34-27 lead.
Clark started the third with a three and Jess Castleman put up five quick points to give the Jackets their biggest lead of the contest thus far, 48-33. The Vikings battled back and cut the deficit to 10, however, at the end of the third frame, 51-41.
With two threes, Jacob Warnick helped cut the GHS lead to two, 55-53, with 2:50 remaining. Will Averett hit one of two from the free-throw line and threw in a layup to put the Vikes ahead, 56-55, with 1:45 left. Perkins missed two free throws, but Dill also missed his. Clark was fouled on a drive and hit one of two to tie the score at 56 with 49.2 seconds remaining in the non-district contest.
Perry County got the ball and ran down the clock to nine seconds before calling a timeout to draw up a final play. When action resumed, Hill missed the open three, Clark found himself with possession and threw the ball downcourt where it found the bottom of the basket and won the game, 59-56.
Clark led Greenfield with 18 points. Perkins and Castleman scored 12 each. Averett was high scorer for Perry County's Vikings with 16.
In the earlier contest, Greenfield led from the beginning and pulled off the season sweep, 51-39.
Four Lady Yellowjackets hit threes in the first frame — Mallory Robinson, Katie McCall, Jordan Galey and Haley Perkins — to propel Greenfield to a 17-8 lead after one quarter.
Shameilla McMullen scored the first four points of the second and helped Greenfield stretch the gap to 11 points at 21-10. The Lady Vikings scored just four points and Robinson added another three to give the Lady Yellowjackets a 26-12 lead at the break.
Galey scored six and the home team ran up a 38-19 lead in the third. Alycia Simmons hit two threes late in the quarter for the Lady Vikings, however, and Greenfield led 38-24 after three.
Perry County began to cut away at the lead in the fourth by knocking down three shots from long distance, but Galey paced Greenfield with seven points and the Lady Yellowjackets earned a 51-39 victory.
Galey led Greenfield with 18 points. McMullen scored 10. Simmons put up 17 points for Perry County.
