Heavily out-manned on the boards, the Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets appeared to be climbing a mountain equipped with few rations in facing the District 14-A opponent Humboldt Lady Vikings this past Friday night, but key free throws in the end pushed them over the summit and into the win column.
The Greenfield boys could not match the feat of the Lady Jackets, falling 80-60 to the visiting Vikings.
In a game that had a playoff feel from the start, the Lady Vikings scored a large fraction of their points off second and third chances. However, their floor leader, Patra Hubbard, stayed in foul trouble throughout the contest and fouled out in the fourth with just two points. In addition, Greenfield had nearly as many points from free throws alone as Humboldt had total points in the fourth, leading to a 70-63 win over last season’s district runner-up.
Katie McCall opened the game with a three and four straight free throws from Jordan Galey got Greenfield off to a 7-2 start. Amber Pearson stole a rebound from Shameilla McMullen and recorded the putback to cut the lead to three, but McMullen made up for it with a 3-point play on the other end of the court. Santia Pettigrew hit two from the line, but a McCall jumpshot doubled up the score, 12-6, in favor of the home squad. A 6-0 run from the Lady Vikings tied the score at 12 and Pettigrew and McMullen traded baskets to knot the score at 14 after one quarter.
Humboldt’s ability to crash the boards raced it out to a 22-16 lead mid way through the second. The visitors kept the lead and increased it to seven, 29-22. McCall hit a three to slice it to four, but Syvonia Cunningham grabbed an uncontested offensive board and put in the shot just before the buzzer to give the visitors a 31-25 lead at the half.
The Lady Vikings continued to control the offensive boards and led 42-31 at the five-minute mark of the third. Galey kept Greenfield in the game, and along with McCall, scored eight straight points to cut the HHS lead to three, 42-39. Dominique Shivers hit one of two free throws, but McMullen scored inside to trim the lead to two, 43-41. Keisha King and Haley Perkins traded baskets and Galey hit a jumper to tie the score at 45. Pettigrew ended the third, however, with an offensive board and putback to give the Lady Vikings a 47-45 edge after three.
A jumper from King gave the Lady Vikings a 49-45 advantage to start the fourth. Mallory Robinson hacked into the lead with a three for GHS, but Jerrica Morgan scored inside to put Humboldt up 51-48. McCall whittled the lead to one with a jumpshot, but Pettigrew answered.
As both teams entered the bonus, the tide slowly began to turn in Greenfield’s favor. Hubbard scored her only basket on an offensive board to give Humboldt a 56-52 lead, but four straight points from Galey tied the score with 3:08 remaining. From there on out it became a battle of free throws. Hubbard and McCall fouled out, but the Lady Jackets connected on 15-of-18 from the line as opposed to Humboldt’s two for nine and held on to win, 70-63.
Galey led all scorers with 33. McCall scored 13. King and Pettigrew each had 19 for the Lady Vikings.
In the second contest, Greenfield hung around the high-flying Vikes for the majority of the game, but fell in the end, 80-60.
Tevin Bryson scored the first six points for the visitors, but Wes Clark, Heath Crouse and Graham Perkins combined to tie the score. A fadeaway from Alex Roberts put Greenfield up 8-6, but Quan Campbell and Antonio Brooks opened up a 19-12 Humboldt lead at the end of one.
Dylan Davidson scored inside and Jess Castleman hit three and a layup to cut the lead to three, 22-19. Campbell put up 11 points, however, and pushed the Vikings out to a 44-32 lead at the half.
Crouse brought the Jackets back to within seven with seven points in the third, but two threes from Antonio Brooks extended the Humboldt advantage to 10, 58-48, after three.
The Vikings held Greenfield to 12 points in the fourth as they pulled away with 22 and won, 80-60.
Campbell led the Vikings with 22 points. Crouse scored 18 and Castleman had 13 for Greenfield.
