Black History Month marked by DSCC

Posted: Wednesday, February 10, 2010 9:54 am

The Messenger 02.10.10
Old, new, exciting and intriguing.
All types of events are included in the schedule for Black History Month at Dyersburg State Community College.
The kickoff event will be a Diversity Forum Monday at 12:30 p.m. at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County. The movie “The Green Pastures” will be shown and then used as a springboard for discussion.
As in years past, Soul Food Luncheons will be held this year — on Tuesday at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center(JNC), on Feb. 24 at the Baptist Collegiate Ministry Center on the Dyersburg campus and on Feb. 25 at the DSCC Gibson County Center.
Each luncheon will feature guest speakers or entertainment.
A Student Heritage Sightseeing Tour of sites in Memphis, including the National Civil Rights Museum, will take place on Feb. 20.  This tour will depart from the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at 8:30 a.m. and the cost is $17 per person. Those interested in taking part must register in the DSCC JNC Student Life Office by Monday.
Two musical events are included in the schedule.
On March 4 at 7 p.m., the Core Ensemble from the theatre production of “Ain’t I a Woman!” will perform at the First Citizens National Bank Auditorium in the Campus Activities Building on the Dyersburg campus. The production celebrates the life and times of four powerful African American women: novelist and anthropologist Zora Neal Hurston, folk artist Clementine Hunter, ex-slave and abolitionist Sojourner Truth and civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer. The musical score is drawn from the heartfelt spirituals and blues of the Deep South, the urban vitality of the Jazz Age, and contemporary concert music by African American composers such as Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, Max Roach and Diane Monroe.
DSCC will host its annual Gospel Extravaganza on March 7. Area choirs will take part in the celebration. The program will start at 2:30 p.m. and will take place at the DSCC JNC Auditorium in the Academic Building.
All events, except the Heritage Tour, are free and open to the public.
For more information, contact DSCC director of Student Life Dorothy Bond by telephone at (901) 475-3166 or by e-mail at bond@dscc.edu.
