Lenten services planned
A Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras meal will be served Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., followed by a time of family-appropriate Mardi Gras fun, at Union City First United Methodist Church, located at 420 East Main St. On  Wednesday, there will be three Ash Wednesday services — two short informal services with the imposition of ashes at 7 a.m. and noon in the chapel and the usual full service for Ash Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.
The oldest traditions of receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday also included the wearing of those ashes in the shape of the cross on the forehead or hand throughout the day as a witness to faith in Christ and surrender to a Lenten discipline. The 7 a.m. service will allow all who attend, including teachers and students, to receive the ashes and wear them through their work or school day. A spokesman said school administrators in both the city and county have been contacted and have recommended that students and staff receive the ashes on the back of the hand if they will be wearing them in school. Others may want to check with their employers for their input.
The public is invited to join the church family for any of these Ash Wednesday services or for the Mardi Gras event on Tuesday. Those planning to take part in the meal that evening are asked to call the church office at 885-3573 to reserve a place by Friday. The cost of the meal will be $4.50 for adults and $2.50 for children 7 years old and younger, with a $16 maximum for family living under one roof. The menu will include pancakes, bacon, sausage, hash browns and fresh fruit.
Dr. David Russell and the congregation invite the community to join them for these services and for regular Sunday worship at 8:45 and 10:50 a.m., with Sunday school for all ages at 9:45 a.m.

Women to meet
“Heart to Heart” is the theme for the monthly luncheon meeting of the local Ken-Tenn Women’s Connection Wednesday  at 11 a.m. at the Ole West Steakhouse at 943 Main Street in Martin.
 The special feature will be Maxine Cash from Weight Watchers. Her program is entitled “Healthy Heart.” Many New Year resolutions include healthy lifestyles, and Ms. Cash will provide hints on achieving these goals.
 “Music from the Heart” selections will be sung by Lou Ann White of Union City.
 Linda Childress from New Albany, Ind., will be February’s speaker. Her presentation is entitled “When Life Is Draining.” Her interactive program will be of interest to all, a spokesman said. 
All women are welcome to attend. The $10 price includes buffet, beverage and tip. Walk-ins are welcome but reservations can be made by Monday morning by calling (731) 587-3915, 885-9029, (731) 479-2979 or 479-8020.
 The program is sponsored by the Ken-Tenn Women’s Connection in association with Stonecroft Inc.
 
Gospel concert set
The Kingsmen and Glad-heart quartets will be featured Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Yates Auditorium at the former Dyersburg High School.
Tickets will be $10 at the door.

Lenten services set
Lenten services are planned at Brown Chapel AME Church at 801 East College St. in Union City at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The Rev. Clay Holliday and the congregation invite the community to attend this special time and to join them for regular services.
Sunday school is at 9:30 a.m. each week. Breakfast is served and transportation is available by calling 885-2675 from 4-6 p.m. Wednesdays.
 
Scholarship program set
The annual Honor Scholarship program will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Jacksonville Freewill Baptist Church, located at 202 College St. in South Fulton.
This year’s speaker will be Bishop T.D. Morris III, moderator of the Eddyville District Conference of the Kentucky  Annual Conference.
Youth from the area churches will be highlighted on the program.
Proceeds from the program will go to the Honor Scholarship Fund.
The public is invited to attend.
