Local champs will compete in Memphis
Potential Weakley County basketball stars in the making showed off their skills with the roundball during the inaugural iHoops Skills Challenge hosted by the Martin Parks and Recreation Department and held Feb. 21 at Martin Middle School.
Local youngsters ages 9 through 14 had the opportunity to participate in the first iHoops Skills Challenge, which is a national basketball skills competition.
The contest provides boys and girls a free opportunity to showcase their basketball abilities in a time-based, half-court obstacle course. The iHoops Skills Challenge focuses on basketball skill development while encouraging participation in the game.
More than 35 participants competed in the local iHoops Skills Challenge Local Competition.
In the boys competition, first-place honors in their respective age groups went to Matt McMillan in the 9-10 age division, Kevon Hess in the 11-12 age group and Alex Ross in the 13-14 age division.
In the girls competition, first-place honors in their respective age groups went to Jordyn Greene for the 9-10 age group, Atitiana Taylor in the 11-12 age division and Tiffany Rechis in the 13-14 age demographic.
These first place local competition champions will now have the opportunity to travel to Memphis to compete in the Regional Competition. The next level of competition will take place at the Memphis Grizzlies Practice Court on Saturday, April 10. This is one of 29 Regional Competitions being held in NBA team markets across the country and in Canada that will determine those youngsters advancing to the National Finals to be held in Orlando, Florida.
