Local student receives DEKALB award

Logan Coates of Westview High School was recently presented the school’s highest agricultural honor, the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award, sponsored by the Monsanto Company. Coates, the son of David and Pam Coates of Martin, received the award for excellence in academics, leadership and agricultural work experience. Logan’s significant experiences and accomplishments have included FFA State Dairy judging team, upper and lower division skills team, land evaluation team and state and national convention delegate. Bill Fuqua is the Coates’ agricultural education instructor at Westview High School. This year the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award celebrates its 63rd anniversary. Over these 63 years, more than 164,000 high school seniors from across the country have received the award. This award has become a symbol for excellence and the school’s highest agricultural honor. In 2009, nearly 2,000 students from high schools in 49 of the 50 states were recognized with the award. As the winner of the 2010 Award, Logan Coates’ name will be recorded on a permanent plaque displayed at Westview High School.
