SF, OC students assisted by selected Peer Tutors

The Messenger 11.23.07

South Fulton High School has successfully identified four Peer Tutors and Obion County Central High School has identified three Peer Tutors for the second generation Peer Tutoring Work Experience program currently under way.
The Peer Tutoring Work Experience program is a competitive grant program offered through the Northwest Tennessee Workforce Board and the Tennessee Career Center System in which area high schools must prepare a grant proposal requesting funds and demonstrate an excellent strategic plan for peer tutoring.
“South Fulton High School served 32 students during the inaugural year of WIA (Workforce Investment Act) funding for the Peer Tutor Work Experience program, which is a phenomenal number considering the size of the school compared to other programs participating,” said Lori Marberry, youth coordinator for the Northwest Tennessee Workforce Board. “I feel confident this year will be a repeat of last year’s success.”
“Obion County Central High School also performed very well during the first generation Peer Tutoring Work Experience program,” Ms. Marberry said. “Ninety-one percent of the students tutored passed the class they received assistance with and that’s excellent.”
The program is designed to employ senior level students from awarded high schools to work as tutors and help advance their peers who are struggling to succeed in a variety of subjects.
The primary goal of the Peer Tutoring Work Experience program is to provide Workforce Investment Act-eligible high school seniors, who have excelled in academic coursework, the opportunity to explore a career in teaching, earn a wage, provide community service and prepare for enrollment in post-secondary education.
Free tutoring is currently available to any high school student in need of academic tutoring in order to pass a class, improve academic scores or earn credit recovery.
“We have a very academically strong group of peer tutors this year,” said Derrick Quinn, Northwest Tennessee Workforce Board youth case manager. “They are very capable and are providing excellent tutorial services to students in need.”
For more information about receiving peer tutoring services, contact Nancy Hall, Master Tutor for South Fulton High School, at (731) 479-1441 or Angie Lamb, Master Tutor for Obion County Central High School, at 536-4688. Derrick Quinn may also be contacted at 1-866-286-3585, Ext. 26, or quinn@nwtnworks.org.
