| Greenfield to offer free rides during Fiddlesticks |

It is time once again for the annual Fiddlesticks Extravaganza hosted by the City of Greenfield. The event, now in its 14th year, features free rides for the young as well as the young at heart. Pope’s concessions will also be available to participants of this year’s event in celebration of the fiddlestick.
The fiddlestick consists of vanilla ice cream dipped in a crunchy chocolate shell covered in chopped peanuts.
The free carnival rides kick off at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in downtown Greenfield. Among those rides will be the Scooby-doo slide, Miraculous Merry-Go-Round and the flying kiddie swings. There will also be a castle moon walk, ninja motorcycles and an adult swinger.
The free rides are sponsored by area businesses and industries. Festival-goers are invited to bring their chairs and enjoy live entertainment by Beyond Productions of Martin each night during the extravaganza. As is tradition with the event, the Greenfield Fire Department will provide free fire truck rides on Saturday.
The local Relay for Life fundraising team will sell barbecue chicken on Saturday.
Turner Dairy will sponsor an ice cream eating contest beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday for those who enjoy a tasty, sweet challenge. The contest is for all ages.
The Pope family, a long-standing name in Greenfield, will once again provide fiddlestick making demonstrations throughout the extravaganza.
This year’s event is dedicated in memory of Jimmy pope, who passed away March 14, 2010.
“We invite everyone to bring your family to Greenfield during the 14th Annual Fiddlestick Extravaganza for some good, wholesome, family fun and some great Southern hospitality,” Greenfield City Recorder Randy Potts said.
The event begins with the carnival at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14 and runs through Saturday, April 17. It will take place on Front Street in the middle block of downtown Greenfield.
History of the Fiddlestick
Since 1924, the J.D. Sullivan and Roy Pope families have been making fiddlesticks in Greenfield and at the various county fairs and celebrations throughout West Tennessee and the Southeast.
Pope’s Concessions has been a family tradition for more than 80 years. Roy Pope worked for the famous J.D. Sullivan Concessions since his youth.
A friend wrote a poem about Roy Pope honoring him as “Mr. Fiddlestick.”
Roy Pope passed away in 1982, but the fiddlestick family tradition continued through his son Jimmy until his death March 14.
Roy’s grandson, James Roy, continues the family tradition.
Fiddlesticks are made from only the best ingredients including Turner vanilla ice cream; rich, dark chocolate and fresh, chopped peanuts.
“That’s our specialty,” Jimmy Pope always said.
Other concessions during the 14th Annual Fiddlestick Extravaganza include – homemade corn dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, snow cones, candy apples, Polish and Italian sausage.
“It is a great event for our community, our county and our region. The Fiddlestick Extravaganza provides an excellent opportunity for people to renew old acquaintances in Greenfield. We invite everyone to come out, enjoy and celebrate the Fiddlestick Extravaganza,” Greenfield Mayor Eddie McKelvy commented.
