UTM celebrates Earth Week
Dr. Mireya Mayor, a two-time Emmy Award-nominated National Geographic Channel field correspondent, is the featured speaker at the University of Tennessee at Martin Earth Week events.
Slated for April 19-22, the Earth Week Film Festival and Events will present four movies and Mayor, an anthropologist and wildlife expert. The events coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Earth Day observance.
Mayor, who has reported on wildlife and habitat issues, will speak at 7 p.m., April 20, in Duncan Ballroom of Boling University Center. Serving as a National Geographic Emerging Explorer, Mayor will talk about the importance of conservation.
Her current ongoing study focuses on a newfound species of mouse lemur, which she discovered on a 2000 field expedition in Madagascar.
As a result of her discovery, a national park was established in the area to protect the rare species.
The film festival will begin with “Dirt, The Movie,” at 7 p.m., April 19, in Watkins Auditorium of the university center. Two films are planned April 21, “The Story of Stuff,” at noon, in Room 229, university center, and “Food, Inc.,” at 7 p.m., ballroom, university center.
Completing the series will be “Kilowatt Ours,” at 7 p.m., April 22, in Room 206, university center. The UT Martin Institute for Civic Engagement is sponsoring the events that are free and open to the public. For more information, contact ICE at 731-881-7325.
