SENIOR GAMES – The Northwest District Tennessee Senior Olympics kicked off Monday with singles, doubles and mixed doubles bowling at Southlane Bowling in Union City. Rita Baker of Martin (seated) and Janet Booth of Union City reviewed their scores, while Terry King of Martin prepared to bowl.
The Martin area will welcome more than 171 senior athletes, ages 50 and older, from across the state for the Tennessee Senior Olympics Northwest District games presented by BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee on April 19-May 4.
The Tennessee Senior Olympics, an Olympic-style competition, includes the following events: bowling, shuffleboard, track and field events, horseshoes, basketball free throw, basketball hot shot, basketball 3 point, swimming, table tennis, golf, awards luncheon and closing ceremony. Various facilities in the Martin area, including Paris Landing State Park, UT-Martin, National Guard Armory, Southlanes Bowling, Sharon Senior Center and Union City Senior Center will be used for these events.
Games began Monday at Southlane Bowling in Union City. They will continue in Union City Thursday when participants will play shuffleboard singles and doubles at the John Tanner National Guard Armory and then again on Friday for additional doubles action. They will then travel to the University of Tennessee at Martin April 27 for track and field events; basketball free throw, hot shot and 3 point; and horseshoes. Play continues in Martin April 28 for swimming. This year table tennis will be held at Sharon Senior Center on April 30 and golf will be played at Paris Landing State Park in Buchanan on May 4.
