Skyhawk tennis ousted in OVC quarterfinals
PADUCAH, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team saw its 2010 season come to an end Friday with a 4-2 loss at the hands of Murray State in Ohio Valley Conference Tournament action at the Heflin Tennis Center. The third-seeded Skyhawks end the season with an overall record of 10-7.
The Skyhawks salvaged one doubles match, as seniors Martie Wahl and Belisa de Brito teamed up to down Angela McGahee and Ashley Canty, 8-4 at No. 1. However, Murray State’s Lyndsay Ottosen and Cassidy Cunitz defeated All-OVC first team honoree Anna Winkelmann and Anna Marie Herbold at No. 2 and Alexis Webb and Lindsey Wiseman defeated Jodie Tiley and Johanie Van Zyl at No. 3 by 8-4 scores.
In the singles competition, All-OVC first teamer Wahl took down McGahee 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, and Herbold defeated Ottosen 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6. Tiley fell in a tight one to Webb at No. 2, 7-6 (3), 7-5, while de Brito fell 6-3, 6-4 to Wiseman at No. 4. Cunitz defeated Van Zyl 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5, giving MSU the three singles points it needed to win 4-2.
The loss caps off another successful season for head coach Dennis Taylor and UT Martin. The team reached double-figure wins for the 14th time in 18 years since joining the Division I ranks in 1993. The team has also now finished with a record of .500 or better in OVC play in 17 of the 18 years they have been conference members.
The match also marked the end of Wahl’s and de Brito’s careers at UT Martin. They leave with a combined record of 157-116 (58 percent), including a 106-51 mark (68 percent) in the OVC.
