Westview wins Memorial
The Westview Lady Chargers bounced back from a 1-1 start in their own Madison Fagan Memorial Scholarship Tournament to claim the title with a 6-1 win over Dyer County in the championship game on Saturday night.
The sense of joy was tempered by a 3-2 loss in 10 innings to Obion County on Monday night in Troy.
To get to the title game in the tourney, the Lady Chargers first won a pitching duel against Union City, 1-0, thanks to a great mound effort by Shaylon Robb. Robb struck out 11, while giving up three hits, walking one and hitting a batter.
WHS scored in the top of the first. Kelly Gaston drew a leadoff walk and scored on Ashley Bynum’s single for the game’s only run.
The Lady Chargers then earned a 5-3 win over South Fulton, avenging two losses earlier in the season. Shanna Chappell picked up the five-inning mound win.
At the plate, Gaston was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. Katelyn Bowen was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run.
The Lady Chargers then edged the Milan Lady Bulldogs, 5-4, scoring the winner after the international tiebreaker rule was applied.
In the sixth, Hazelwood started on second base via the international rule, stole third and came home with the winning run on the catcher’s throwing error. Hazelwood scored three of Westview’s five runs. Bynum doubled twice and scored one run.
In the tourney title game, Westview avenged a loss on Friday to Dyer County, downing the Lady Choctaws 6-1 for the crown.
Westview took advantage of early mound wildness and plated five runs over the first two innings. Robb shut down DC for the win.
Against Obion County, the Lady Chargers repeatedly hit the ball hard but right at the OC fielders.
Eventually the international tiebreaker rule was put to use in the 10th inning. Gaston started at second for Westview and scored on a Bynum double.
OC managed to plate two in the 10th to win, 3-2.
