The host Dresden Lady Lions struggled against the pitching of McKenzie’s Crystal Doub in District 13-A action Tuesday.
Doub retired the Lady Lions in order in four of the first five innings to key her team to a 9-2 victory.
It was a no-doubter base hit that gave McKenzie the early lead. In the top of the first inning, Kelsey Carr stroked a one-out solo home run over the fence in left. DHS senior right-hander Courtney McMillin took care of the other three batters she faced, striking out all the MHS trio.
While Doub was retiring the first nine Lady Lions she faced in order, McMillan worked out of a jam in the second inning. Dresden recorded a pair of force outs at third base and shortstop Jesica Parsley fielded a grounder and fired to first for the third out, stranding a pair of Lady Rebs.
The McKenzie bats went to work in the third. Evan Hudgins led off with a single and scored on Trevatia Bowden’s RBI double for a 2-0 advantage. Two DHS errors in the fourth allowed MHS to double its lead. Another single and two doubles stretched the advantage to six runs in the fifth.
McMillin wriggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth to keep the gap at six.
Dresden came alive in the sixth. Brooke Irvine led off with a double and scored on a throwing error. Tori Flippin, who reached on the error, came home on Jesse Jones’ RBI groundout.
McKenzie tacked on three runs in the seventh to win 9-2.
